I have a 1987 Regal 307 that I have had for a few years. I have been planning on swapping in a new motor for quite some time. I now have the extra time to begin this job plus a house and garage to do the work in. They really frown on a person rebuilding a engine in an apartment parking lot Anyway I was thinking of a chevy 350 but Im not married to that idea if its going to be to much extra work envolved. I would like a final project to have atleast 300 hp and pass emissions. would another olds engine be easier for this swap?
I know this is a V8 site but.... What about a 3.8 Turbo? Or (As smartin suggested) a Buick 350? Or even a Buick 455???!
I was thinking really leaning towards the chevy 350 because of price on parts but I am now looking into the buick 350. what year range would I want if I was to go the buick route for the engine? or does it matter?
I would go 68-71. 72 up was getting into some pretty ugly emissions junk...although 72 isn't quite as bad as the rest. 71 Started the lower compression engines...70 would be your best bet IMO... I'm sure there are others that will say otherwise though:grin: :TU:
i believe 68 and 69 had the higher compression as well. they have a different oiling system, though, but i believe you can change to later style pushrods and lifters with no trouble (not positive). a 1970 high compression engine made 410 ft lbs of torque at about 3000rpm. who wants a chevy?
I hate to say this on a Buick site, but if emissions is your number one concern, you need to look into the Olds. They have a reputation for running the cleanest. I myself have a 69 Buick 350 in mine. One of the 10.25 - 1 compression engines.
