    Madcat455 Need..more... AMMO!!!

Anybody out there know any spec's on the Brazilian 2.0 in an 89 Sunbird. I just bought a non runner off of ebay, figuring I could get her running... (price was REAL cheap). Anyway, the guy had the head gasket replaced... supposedly drove it for two months and then parked it one night then that was it. It gets spark, and fuel. I set it back to basic timing, He had the #1 plug one terminal retarded on the dist. When I did that, it started getting very hard to trun over... I decided to do a compression check and I got between 210-215psi on all the cylinders. Now... I'm thinking thats alittle too high. So, I need to know what the stock compression reading should be on that particular motor.

    Any help out there.

    TIA

PS... If it is too high, then what would cause it?? Timing belt jump a couple of teeth, maybe advancing the cam?? That might explain the retarded plug wire locations:Do No: :Do No: or am I just crazy:grin:

This is the engine with the distributor that sticks out the side of the head right? I think around 100 psi would be normal for a low compression engine like that. Its a possibility that the head could have been milled because of a warpage. If thats the case, that could have upped the compression to the point that its hard to turn over. I believe Fel-Pro makes "head saver" head gaskets that are thicker to compensate for heads that have been excessively milled. As you know, its all just speculation as the car isnt in front of me.

    Thanks Jason,

I'm going to do another test tomorrow just to be sure of what I'm getting... yeah, its the one with the dist sticking out the side. I think there is an ignition problem as it will only run (barely) with the pedal to the floor, and it backfires out the intake.

The MAP sensor was unplugged when I bought it... I wonder if its bad, maybe it could cause this prob... I know it won't run without it. But I don't know if it will still try to run.

    Any other Ideas??

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

Good Luck - My Wife (then....girlfriend) had one of those motors in her Sunbird....

Blown head-gasket, milled the head....fix that, but the car always had a no-start condition that i chased and chased and chased......

......Best thing I ever did (for her ....and for MY sanity) was get her to dump it

.Not what you want to hear, but and indication of where you might be going

Here's a link to the TurboBuick board where there was a discussion about it.....might lead you somewhere

Is this one of the ohc motors or not? The one thing that comes to mind is a plugged cat. How much vacume is the motor pulling?
This is the same motor as the Cavaliers. Great motors the whife gets more miles out of one than anything else.I would not worry about the compression reading if they are all even. If I think of any thing else I will contact you.

    Mark,

I think the compression is fine, I did another check and they were all between 170-180... I have done some more troubleshooting, and it seems like its getting too much gas. If I crank it over... It'll have gas pool in the bottom of the intake. Then, If I pull the wire off of the injector (so it won't fire) and hold it at WOT, it will actually run for about 30 sec (sounding normal) before it dies. I did replace the TPS sensor and it did nothing.

Today, I pulled the IAC valve... cleaned it real good, pulled the injector and cleaned that. Now, it will try to start with the throttle closed... but not at WOT. But I still have the problem with it getting the pool of gas.

I'm beginning to think there is a problem with the ECM... Disc. Auto has one for $80 so its worth it to just try. (since Yards want $40 for a use one...lol)

Spark, Timing, are right on... I don't have any trouble codes, Do you know of any other sensors on the OHC, TBI setup that control fuel delivery??? I can't think of any except the TPS, and IAC:Do No: I know the MAP controlls spark and fuel, but thats only after the computer has opened the loop. (if I rember correctly)...

    Thanks for your help,

    Jeff

BTW... I can't get it to run long enough to check for Vac. but there are no major leaks that would prevent it from running that I can see.
