I know I'm NOT supposed to say the "C" word...........but, I had this thing rebuilt by the dealer because I wanted it done right. Boy am I warped! Unfortunately it down-shift from 4-3 more then it should. It's especially annoying when driving around the neighborhood at 15-25MPH. It just seems to be down-shifting every time you go around the corner it has to down-shift when hitting the apex or just going straight in stop-n-go traffic. At some set speed I would think it would shift into 3rd, right know it seems to be about 10MPH(too low). The dealer basically said that's in the new flash(PC) calibration and everything is operating fine. I just wonder if any tranny guys think this is normal or anyone else experienced this? Thanks!
Does the four speed auto use a governer like the three speed? If so, read on. In my Dynastys last trans (3 speed), when it dropped into a lower gear when moving, it was the governer causing the problem. DON'T sue me if this advice doesnt work for you. Put it n park while going under 10 MPH! Don't let park stop you, pull it back into drive after a few seconds. That'll vibrate the heck outta the governer and losen up some of the crud in it. This is not a joke! It worked for mine. I had to do mine frequently since there was metal in my tranny form destroyed final-drive bearings. Hopefully yours just has some crud.
I used to work in a Chrysler dealer for about 5 years. There isn't a govenor body like the 3 speeds. It really does sound like a computer flash problem or possibly even a trans controller. I always said if it wasn't for Chrysler's trannys, we'd be out of a job.
If that's an A604 tranny, I got rid of my last Caravan for that reason. That tranny is a real good example of Chrysler engineering at it's finest. Mine used to keep jumping into limp mode (2nd gear only) during acceleration. Real good when going up the ramp to the interstate! I had to stop the motor and restart it to clear the computer code and it would be OK for a while until it did it again. Usually up the next ramp!:af: Vacuum modulators and mechanical governors will surely be missed as automobiles become all computer controlled.:bglasses:
I thought the computer controlled four speeds might not use the governer, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up:TU:
... I dont have any mechanical input on this, just wanted to say that my brother and one of my sisters have owned 3 chrysler vans and every one of em dropped the transmissions maybe every 6 months :3gears:
There used to be a website dedicated to this subject that addressed your question. Type "A604 transmission" in your search engine and you might find it. Some people swear they will never buy another Dodge. I love mine (except for the tranny:grin: ) It's my second one, but it's a '94. So far the tranny has been ok and it has 140,000 miles.
wowie.............140 is is really good but I'm with ya on these Chrysler minivans! Geat Vehicles as long as you have a good transmision:TU:
Each time it snows, we get at least one caravan in the shop that spit the differential pinion pin through the case. I love 604's, they put food on the table! It sounds as if you have a programing error. Beg or borrow a '93 or '94 Caravan from a buddy or the local used car lot and put its trans controller on your van and road test. If it works then replace yours with a new one. Its located on the firewall on the passenger side. Three bolts and the wire harness and your done.
Yup, I'm one of them. My folks had one. piece of s@#T. Never again. Hey chrysler......:moonu: :moonu: :moonu: :moonu: :moonu: :moonu: :moonu: :moonu:
