A/C idle adjustment

I have an 800 cfm Q-jet on the car. When the A/C is turned on, the idle drops so low it wants to stall. I have played with the idle speed and the timing but I can't seem to get it right. I have seen other makes with a solenoid that kicks up the idle when the A/C is turned on. Is there such a device for the Q-jet? If so, does anyone have any pictures I can look at to figure it out? Thanks.

There are typically solenoids on ANY such installation, regardless of the carb. As I recall, the wire for the solenoid was green, with a white connector cover. If the harness has one, (it could have been cut off), the solenoid was used. Also, if the application was used, the emission sticker will specify its settings. The solenoid was silver in color, with a hex head on the plunger, for adjustment. Let me know what you find here, but the GM solenoid was typically used in any model, if it had A/C. Ray

Not sure on this, but I thought the solenoids on our Buicks were not factory installed until late '71. The parts book lists an adaptor kit for '71 cars that had a factory dashpot installed. The intake casting had predrilled/tapped holes for the dashpot & the same ones were used for the solenoid. '72 had a slightly different set up, again the casting was a little different too.
Power was taken from a pink wire, hot when ignition is on, & also fed power to one side of the trans. solenoid.
Did '70 have the trans. solenoid on the carb.? Might be able to fit a later solenoid if you can fasten it to the intake, somehow.

    Steve,
70 did have the trans solenoid on the carb. I just yanked a 455 from a 70 Wildcat with 75k original. What QQ needs is the 72-up set-up. I have this pictured on our site. This is similar to the one on your 71. You set regular engine idle using the idle screw on the driver's side of the carb. When the ac is on, +12V goes to the green wire to ac compressor clutch and has a splicer to the AC idle compensator solenoid. To set idle w/ac on, you simply unscrew the plunger using a 3/8" open end wrench to desired idle rpm. I usually set it to 800 in drive unless you have a big cam.

    George,
Should you not have a '72 solenoid, I have a working unit here. Bolts to the intake.
Wiring differences aside for different years, get 12V to it & it will work.
