In my 1971 Skylark my A/C sometimes works via the swith on the dash then not. When the A/C clutch does not engage there is no current going to the compressor. When the switch does work there obviously is current. Any ideas?? For now I leave the switch on so that when the car starts up the A/C is always on. I'm hoping not to damage anything but I need the A/C here in Fl. Was considering replacing the switch on the dash with the thought there is some sort of internal fuse link that might be acting up.

it could be the selector switch. Mine is intermittent bad right now. Once I get the clutch to energize with the selector switch, I shut down the A/C with the blower switch and I don't touch the selector switch. That way you don't put extra strain on the starter trying to turn the compressor.

I bought a new switch from a board member here and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

EDIT: I thought I recognized your screen name. I already gave you the same advice in another thread...lol

Posted a general question before regarding no current at all, didn't know it was the switch. Thanks for the advice. Really need that A/C to work here!

Try the Year One catalog as this switch was available new. If you can find GM part # order from your local GM dealership. Also consider the Blower relay which is the small silver box on the firewall inside engine compartment which is very common to go. Year one sells for about $13 bucks. GM part relay #1236033. I suggest changing that part as you can do it yourself in 5 minutes and save yourself mechanic fees. If it is old cannot hurt anyway. Another item is the resistor screwed into the fiberglass AC box on the firewall. It has the multi connector on it. The 71 style is tough to find. When these go they usually just take out one or two speeds on the fan but you never knwo.
