I got some headers on the way for the 455 and I'm looking for a new exhaust system to go behind it. I've been all over youtube streetfire.net exhaust websites and this forum and almost every thread I've found people have wanted either the quietest exhaust or the "meanest sounding" or best performing exhaust. I'm looking for something in the middle really, I'm looking for something with good performance that you can hear (from inside the car) at idle and cruise but could easily be ignored or drowned out by turning the radio up if you wanted. The buick is my daily driver...I mean true daily driver, its the only car I have thats running right now!:af: I want a smoother sounding toned idle nothing choppy, some of the exhuasts I've listened to sound like they're a deisel or about to die. As far as WOT it doesnt need to be heard from a mile away but I would like something that means business. alot of people seem to like the dynomax super turbo #17749 but I have also heard that they're really quiet at idle and cruise. I watched a video of someones White GSX with Spintech race/prostreet mufflers and I loved the WOT sound but the idle was too "lopey" or "choppy" for my taste. I like the flowmaster 70 series sound but im not sold on their performance or price for that matter:eek2: . What I'm thinking at this point is a full 2 1/2" or 3" system with dynomax super turbos (14" ones for a little more noise) or spintech sportsmans which is supposedly spintechs quietest muffler.

does anyone have any other suggestions? videos and soundclips would be appreciated.:TU:

oh and the motor is pretty much stock... for now.

Cam selection plays a HUGE role in the sound of the car. With out changing the exhaust or mufflers a car can go from good to loud and droning with a cam swap, or the other way around.

If you have a pretty much stock cam, then a car with a wilder cam that is just a "bit" too loud for you might be just right with your engine.

There are a few more video's of in and out of the car on my channel. That is with a Summit universal 2.5" dual exhaust kit.

PM me with your regular e-mail address and I will send you a short clip taken with an I-phone of mine. It is a 507 hp 470 ci with TA headers, TA 3' pipes, an X pipe from Summit, and 50 series Flowmasters. I managed to e-mail it to myself but I don't know how to post it here on the forum. I'd be glad to e-mail it anybody who might be able to post it. I didn't want it real loud like the 40 series but I wanted it to sound like a proper hot rod. I like it.

X2. You are confused in regards to exhaust system design contributing to the "choppy" or "smooth" idle characteristics as it has little impact on idle quality. Given two completely identical exhaust systems, major differences in cam selection and static compression ratio can yield very significant sound differences.

To get a better idea of what you're after, find audio or video of an engine similar to your build, otherwise you're comparing apples & oranges.

3" system with x pipe and Hooker Areo chambers.. I built a GSX with this system on it years ago, and it was reasonable driving around, but really barked at WOT.

I actually had a whole bunch of folks come up to me at Norwalk, after seeing it run, to ask what system it had on it.. they thought it sounded awesome. It's the next step up from the quiet long case dynomax muffler.

X pipe was the biggest factor in killing the drone at cruiseing speed. 3" exhaust is a touch louder, even if you don't need the sizing, the sound is considerably deeper thru the bigger pipes.

Based on your desires, I would say the 2 1/2" version of your initial thought would be my choice.

Walker dynamax mufflers are probably the best between stock sound and Flowmasters

Ditto. I've never been sorry about this choice. He means their SuperTurbos. About a decade back Carcraft or Hotrod did a backpressure/noise comparo. The Walkers took home the gold. Less backpressure than the others examined and weren't so loud as to make you sorry about it.

The SuperTurbo's come long case and short. Long less drone. I don't the GS enough so I went with the short case and enjoy it!

Just two weeks ago I removed the flowmaster super 40's from my car and replaced them with 14" Dynomax super turbos. Ahhhhh.....What a relief that has been. I couldn't stand the drone of the flowmasters at cruising rpm(2-3000). The super turbos give the car the "just right" musclecar sound that I was after. I think you might be happy them also. Now I just need to find someone to buy these flowmasters I have lying around.

Thanks for all the help and input guys. I've been researching some more and I think I want to go with a whole pypes exhaust kit with the race pro mufflers. Anybody have this kit or hear anything about them? The price is good and I really like the sound of the race pros, if I end up not liking the mufflers though I'd definately swap them out for the walkers. I'm thinking of getting the 2 1/2" kit but I thought it was interesting that their 3" kit is actually cheaper??
