HELLO TO ALL, My name is Jake Hernandez and I am very happy to say that I have just become the proud owner of a beautifully maintained 1970 Skylark with the 350-4 Hi-Compression engine. I have wanted a Skylark for decades and now I got it. A new RAM AIR hood with hood tac was added however and the car received a great paint job. That being said.....is it possible to replace the stock air cleaner with a dual snorkel cleaner so that the ram air hood becomes functional? Any help greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the site and congrats on the purchase of your Buick, Jake. I don't know the answer to your air cleaner question but I was wondering if you could post some pics of your Skylark. Also, where are you located?
Welcome, The 69 350 GS had the same type hood I don't see why you couldn't do it. Good luck (P.S. without pictures it didn't happen. LOL)
I think the only hold back would be is it a 350 2V or 4V? R/A cleaners are for a 4V and bigger on the carb mount. Youd hafta modify the base with a smaller plate to adapt to; no biggy. Youll need to get handy doing stuff like that to make things work... Bill in TR
great pics that will help Jake. His post said its a 4 barrel so get a 350 ram air cleaner and your good to go. Should also use a front support hook that bolts to the thermo housing. Welcome to the board. gary
Thanks for the responses. The carb is a 4 barrel so I'm really hoping the dual snorkel is possible. Purchased the car from a gentleman in Medford,OR. who due to health issues had to part with it. He knows he's passing it on to someone who's going to pamper it though so he's happy about that. Its new home will be in Downey CA. I need to learn how to properly attach photos here.
A special thanks to you Gary. My 6th sense tells me your the guy with the answers. I've found and air cleaner the was on a 455. Does it have to be from A 350?
Nope, it does NOT have to be from a 350. Only real issues are the snorkel support and 350 style foam pieces, both available aftermarket. I think, but not certain, that one of the regulars on here (Mike Garrison) makes the support; I know he makes the high quality radiator core support patch kits (which is what the aftermarket sells). Welcome to the family! Also, update your profile, as to location and cars. You might be near someone that could be overflowing with Buick knowledge and experience.
Hey Jake, congrats. That is a very nice looking Skylark. If you have the SP 350 with the 10.25 to 1 compression (315HP), you essentially have the same drivetrain as a '70 GS 350. Those '70 SP engines are pretty stout and will surprise many unsuspecting other drivers. Do you know what rear-end axle ratio you have? I hope you have a posi rear.
Welcome to the Buick world Jake. Like mentioned, the snorkel air cleaner will work, either 455 or 350 if you can find one. 72 snorkel air cleaners were different shape on driver side snorkel.
Welcome Jake. I have the same car in stock form if you need any pix. The previous replys pretty much covers it. Finding the air cleaner body will be the hard part. Chuck
I hope we'll see you and your car out at the next SoCal Buick meetup. Some pix of this year's event posted here. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?294069-Southern-California-All-Buick-Meet-and-Greet-3rd-Annual Also, I've got the snorkel air cleaner from a 71. The exhaust manifold connection and the flaps in the intake have been removed. Also has the GS455 and Stage 1 decals. I'd let it go pretty cheap and I'm here in the L.A. area. PM me if you're interested.
Thanks for all the 'WELCOMES". Thank you Dennis, I cant imagine anything keeping me from the next meetup. Looks like I'll have some time to do some touching up first. thanks.
Hello SteeveeDee, Does your biography mean that you'd be willing to watch over my shoulder while you teach me how to do a few things as in brakes, suspension, and A/C? Of course I'd be willing to feed you for your time. Jake
I'm picking this Skylark up on Sunday the 21st. Turns out that the gentleman I'm purchasing it from actually has the original window sticker in a frame that he would set up on the engine when displaying at shows. He's given me alot of the info but I'm so excited about getting it home, I just kinda keep starring at the pictures going UH HUH, UH HUH. I'll post the info and much more photos when its home.
