NHRA does not allow you to mix and match mild and moly..

Jim, thats not quite correct....They mandate that it MUST be tig welded if it's a mix. My tube chassis is mild steel 2x3 rectangle tubing and my cage is chrome moly. It was built that way by a professional chassis shop and it has been certified and re-certified by NHRA tech 3 times. Take it easy, Doug.

    Re: Chassis

Doug, I think JW meant to say they FROWN upon, easier to certify if its all the same metal..:Do No:

Looks VERRRY SWEEEET Jim!! Sounds like its almost ready!! I'm assuming that if you have to ask HOW MUCH this whole project costs, its way out of MY REACH!!:Dou:

BTW Jim, "ONLY" 12 hours a day??? Man, I thought that was a normal day!!

    SmittyDawg Need another garage....

AWESOME shop! Plus, it's only 20 minutes away from my house!:Brow:

And as for working 12 hour days to catch up, my guess is that he's saving about 4 hours a day in time just being in this larger shop......knowing how meticulous Jim was about cleanliness in his old shop, cleaning things up about every four hours, moving things around, etc.... Maybe he'll actually get some sleep now! :TU:

    Doug..

All the roll cage must be of the same material.. Frame rails are not consider a roll cage, in a 2x3 car..

George's front cage struts were interegal parts of the frame/suspension, and are mild.

The guy who certified the car, did tell me that if we had used Moly, it would not have passed, on this particular car.

    Re: Re: Chassis

True.. if you find the right inspector, you may get by with a mixed cage.. it's not a "in stone" rule.. but generally accepted. But no one in their right mind is going to mix tubing in a cage, and try and get by with it.. it's just NOT done..

IT's not that bad... considering the man hours to build it, and the not so cheap bulletproof rear end parts.

For a roller, less paint, and motor/trans, but with all the goodies, you will be into it for about $28-32K.. that is the "drop off the body/chassis at the shop, and pick up the roller price..

It can be less, with less expensive rear end stuff. The 3rd member and housing in this car are $4500.00..

That engine with all the custom stuff (mid and motor plates ect) is 18K

T-400 full of aluminum drums and a brake is $2500

Misc will add up to 5K

To build one of these from scratch, figure 60-65K.. or about what a full blown concourse car will cost you, depend on what you start with and how much you pay for the resto parts (ya' know.. those $1000 grills..).

Ok.. only 12 hours a day at the shop.. 7AM to 7PM

Tonight is "club night".. I will put a good 5 hours in on BPG stuff tonight..

Then, back to my normal 4-5 hours of shipping stuff, estimating, billing, and the books..

You guessed it.. I have no life.. I own a small business.. that just expanded, and now demands even more of my time in the shop, to pay the overhead..

But no complaints here.. your dreams can come true, if you work hard enough to make it happen.
