I don't know the specs on the chevy 307 but they replaced the 283 as the base small block in I think '68. I put one in a beater '67 chevelle. With 1.94 heads, an AFB 4 barrel, a 4 spd and 3.73 gears it ran pretty good but smoked like hell. :3gears:

What about the 396 that was really a 402?

Had a bore like a quarter and a stroke a week long  Never intended for performance.Olds had a 260 which was designed in a similar style.Memories.. Later,Tony.

You could actually get a 396'' in the 60's and up into 70' I think. In 71' as I recall, it turned into a 402" and was even offered in pickups(a couple are here in the area). If you do the math, a 402" miraculously turns into a .030" over 396". Kinda makes you wonder if we hit a bad run of oversized pistons HAHA.

I plumb forgot about the 307. I had a hundred friends with early '70s Malibus
that had 307s in them. Man I'm losin' it! The 366 was a de-stroked 396 for trucks. We had one at my job when I started there back in the mid-80s and it was old already by that time. Probably dated back to the early 70s.

    you're right, different from olds. found a reference to it being a 283 with a 327 crank... 3.875 x 3.25

The 366 came out in 1966 as a truck engine, it ran pretty good for a truck engine. It was not a destroked engine but a small bore. I used to buy cores from the dealer to get the cranks for 396s and 427s. The 307s were left over 283 blocks with a 327 crank, everyone hated them at the time but they weren't really that bad. I used to see all kinds of arguments over Buick engines because people thought the torque number on the aircleaner was cubic inch.

The 302 was the Z/28 motor. SCCA rules dictated a max of 302ci to run Trans Am back then.

Man, that guy's lucky he didn't get in my face and try correcting me... being a jackass, I would have said, "Those are Chevy engines you douche-bag! This is a Buick! If you know so much about cars then why can't you even tell the difference between a Chevy and a Buick?"

But that's what jackasses say as a retort. Usually.

at that point you could have just looked at him and said " its a hemi" lol. or better yet you could hit him with the always popular 3/4 race cam, or a 350 big block. ive ran a part store for the last 10 years, if only you guys could here some of the stuff people come up with.
