On Monday, my wife lost her keys to the minivan :Dou: . I ended up giving her the keys to my daily driver for work and I was 'forced' to drive the Buick for the day

Going out to lunch, shifting into 3rd didn't feel quite right. On my way home, driving down the Garden State Parkway (30 mile one-way commute), the transmission stuck itself in 4th and would not shift out of gear.

Miracously, I made it home (while yielding at some stop signs and thank goodness for EZ-Pass). I called Al (thanks for the number Yardley :beer) because he helped me out of this same situation about 2 (or 3) years ago in Englishtown. Well, Al gave me a 20 minute 'crash-course' in linkage adjustment while I was under the car and I was able to get everything aligned again. It seems one of the nuts on the shifter rod backed out and 'mucked' up everything.

I just wanted to say a public thank you for Al Fiandaca - it's special people like you who make this Buick community great.

THANK YOU!

I remember the ball stud snapping off my W-30 years ago. Got stuck in 4th. Drove it all the way home without stopping!

Geez Marco, you got me all blushing and stuff...
Anyways, I still think you need to get rid of that old nasty shifter ( I'll take it off your hands for you) and put a nice aftermarket Hurst in there.... :Brow:
As a matter of fact, I'll even swap you mine ( just cause we're friends.. :pp )
No, but honestly, I'm glad to help. I'd look into having that one rebuilt if I were you because you've been lucky twice now. If you've ever had a trans jam in two gears at once, it can be real ugly, especially for a car as nice and original as yours.

My son-in-law has also had a few problems with the 4 speed in the 65 Gran Sport. Fortunately he found an old school 4 speed guy (locally) who said he can adjust the linkage and have it like new in no time.

P.S.,.......................Al is (just) O.K.   .....GOOD PEOPLE !!!!

Thanks Al!
I know the shifter was rebuilt (sent to Hurst) when Vic B. restored the car sometime between 1988 and 1992. I'm curious why this bolt decided to loosen up. I'm thinking of putting on a lock washer and another 9/16 bolt on each of the three shafts to prevent this from happening again.

How do I tell if a shifter needs to be rebuilt again? I would agree if all bolts were tight when I had this problem. Do you remember if a loose bolt caused my problem at Englishtown? I do remember you telling me the linkage should be adjusted annually
