I'm taking a road trip this weekend to Spanish Fork Utah to pick up a '72' 455 engine to rebuild. I've got a universal engine lift plate to attach to the manifold but my question is...what size bolts do I take with me to attach this plate properly? thanks in advance.

Once you take the carb off you should just be able to reuse the bolts from the carb.

Not if it's a Q-Jet. The bolts are 5/16ths. course thread by 1 1/4"-1 1/2" long. Use a H/Duty flat washer under them & make sure they are pretty snug. For a torque spec. if you want to go that far, 10lbs.

Thanks for the info. The engine is minus the carb or else that would have been easy. "Pretty snug" torque is only 10 lbs??

Yes, they only need to be "Snug" so there is no side play to shear to bolts. The strength is the "Pull" weight, not the shear weight. I've pulled engine & trans. assemblies this way.

Agreed. Only torque the nuts to the same as what you would if it was the carb you were holding down. Any more and you stand the chance of stripping them out or shearing them off. I too have pulled many motors with pull plate.

Another word of caution..... Those engine lift plates, which are universal for the most part, may or may not be drilled for a Q-jet. I would just make sure of this before heading out for a road trip. If you have to, go to a local parts store and buy a Q-jet gasket and see if it lines up with all four bolt holes. If not you can drill them before you leave home. Mine is full of holes for just about every carburetor under the sun. Have a safe trip.
