Seems my brother lost the little plastic cup you use to set the air gap.Anybody know what the air gap is supposed to be?
No I have not found the spec.My brother thought it was .030 so that is where I set it.Seems to work OK
No problem with Pertroniks in the 5 years I ran them. Points are good but you gotta keep farting with them. My only complaint with Pertroniks is the 5 second wait to power it up when you start it cold. It's kinda like the diesel.
tom i'll drag them out later . heck i might even put a new set of points in the dart ... just need a dist machine to do it ou:
I went through two Pertronix systems. Do yourself a favor and throw it in the trash! I went back to points for now until I can afford the full conversion from Ignitionman.
Pertronics Not good luck with the "P" ignition here either. I'm running points again too. Set dwell once a year at the miles I drive and set timing at the track (which I would have to do with the Pertronics too). Breaker points are underrated - they were pretty reliable for most of the 20th century and they still work good for me.
Easy to set on GM, too, if you don't have a dwell meter. Turn it in until it misfires, back out 1/4 turn. Used to be able to hit the dwell +/- 1 degree by ear. I think the early Pertroniks (type that requires the magnetic plate) has given them the bad name. I have the IgnitorII and it had no problem al the way to 7k a coupla years ago. Heard good things about the Crane conversion. They have a built in rev limiter, too. Good thing to have on a 4 speed. Check this out and pay special attention to the last post about the resistor wire. http://72.22.90.30/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24401&highlight= :bglasses:
No luck with Petronics 1 or 2. Just put in M and H conversion kit today. It's a magnetic system, and uses the single points wire. Started right up, and seems to be ok, so far. Will see how it does at 5400-5600 rpm's. I'll still bring along a spare points distributor, just in case. Joe X.
pertronix Joe,I had the pertronix I in my 68 nova ss396 ;with a msd 6A Box;always had this misses/stumble at 5000 rpm changed to the iginitor II ;wasn;t as bad. Finally I removed the AC delco plugs and installed a set of NGK the miss disappeared;just a thought.Chris Teed
Chris: That's exactly the combination I ran on the Ramrod with my Pertroniks for 4 years trouble free. I had a 6AL box. I used the NGK 3670 V groove plugs. They lasted all season and only changed them at the end out of habit, still looked great. Had nothing but trouble with dirty plugs when I ran the AC 43S. Just ordered 2 new sets of the NGK's on line ($2.24 ea). They're great.
Thnx for the info Chris, and Dave. What does NGK stand for, and who makes them? Also what caps seemed to work best. I've been using the A/C RTS45 plugs. I'm running a somewhat small, 12 volt wire to my blaster 2 coil, and hope it's ok with this M-H system. I also had a Crane conversion once, with that built in rev limiter. It didn't last long either. Joe X.
I think it's Nippon Genki Sankwa or something very close to that. They're really big in motorcycle racing.
