Had compressor rebuilt by Classic Auto Air for the 66. Been using them for 25 years and this is first disappointment. The clutch will not engage without giving it a nudge with finger. Jumped direct from battery to insure full voltage. The gap is about .038 which is apparently too high for this clutch.

The manual states up to 1/16 gap is acceptable but maybe springs in new clutch are stronger. Called CCA and they said best to be around .020-.030 gap and said I needed a clutch hub installer to press it on a little further to close gap a bit. Does that sound right?

    Thanks

    Jason,
.0625 id too big of a gap to work effectively if at all. When I was a line tech back in the early 80's we did a lot of compressor servicing and at the time I used .030" down to about .025" . You will need a clutch installer to pull the plate closer. I have one to lend you if needed.

It's a pretty easy job, just have to remove the nut, screw the installer on to the shaft and push it on. Once that's done. reinstall the nut and you're done.

I remember shims of various thicknesses installed under the clutch against the end of the compressor shaft. The clutch actually bottoms and the nut holds it tight. If the clutch doesn't want to go any deeper, you will have to remove it and adjust the shim pack. Local auto parts stores have the complete puller/pusher kits for loan or sale.

YES, as John stated there are shims behind the clutch hub. Go to Advanced or Auto Zone to borrow hub puller.
