OK, pic attached. 7041540 carb LH is original, RH is the rebuild kit accel pump. You can probably see my questions already:

    1) Both are extended and bottoms and flange for the seal are matched, am I supposed to cut off the little tang on the top of the rebuild one to make it match the overall length or leave as is (I'm guessing it should be trimmed to match orig)?

    2) Why is the notch for the spring retainer further down?? Are they trying to compensate for the spring losing its strngth over the years or...??

Anything else I need to watch for?? Thanks a bunch, just never seen a accel pump like this one (usually they just give you the rubber seal).

I've seen the same variation in the placement of the retaining notch. Should make no difference other than the tension required to push it down. I believe that the little tang at the top goes with some Pontiac (?) applications that have a vent at the front top center of the carb and a lever going to that tang on the acc pump. Holds the vent open at idle and closes it when the acc. pump is depressed.

By the way, every rebuild kit I've bought for 20+ years has had the whole pump, not just the rubber seal.
