Who has the best price on 455 adjustable pushrods? Thinking of using 1969 rockers so do you guys still order the hybrid tops?

We used 455 pushrods on our motor with the early style 430 rockers before our rollers. The ball is snaller, but we never had any issues with it. No street time but lots of passes over the 10 years we ran them st 6000 to 6500 rpm

Smith Brothers will build you any pushrod your heart desires. And probably cheaper than you can get them through parts suppliers.

Yup, I did that too, on the strip, for years, and was very surprised to see that the first street motor I did with that setup, mushroomed the tips of the 455 pushrods in the 430 rockers. Nothing radical, a mild street motor with a modest flat tappet hyd cam.

Don't run it on the street.. custom pushrods with the correct ends will cost about the same as the adjustables, so figure out your length, and you won't have to worry about them coming loose, which does happen.

Wonder why it holds up on the Strip buy not the street. I clear to see the ball size is very differant.

We ran 455 pushrods with 430 rockers for about 2500 Street miles with the 107 window rattler ....., and then they ate themselves

    Ben

10 passes on the strip/plus the staging lanes/ burnout box and return road is the equivalent to a few miles on the street. I suspect if you only drove the car 50 miles, they would still look ok.. But that's a whole season of drag racing every weekend.

On the one that ate them for me, it did take a while... 2-3K miles as I recall.

Good point, I just figured the extra rpms would help the wear, we ran this setup for 10 years, maybe I just got super lucky, like I said I could see the 455 were alot smaller than the 400/430. But the rockets are alot stronger

Is TA the only place to order adjustable pushrods with the hybrid end for 67 rockers in a 70 and up head? Only reason is I might change to thicker head gaskets down the road from my .020 steel to .060 cometics to lower my compression.

Got that. Anyone know the specs I would need to order adjustable push rods for cup ends and how long for a block with zero deck and 55cc heads?

Stock push rods for the 400-430-455 are 9.350. So the adjustables would need to cover a certain range. There is no way to accurately predict your pushrod length. You could order 1 adjustable, and determine that, then order the right length. Here is the push rod page in the TA catalog. TAPushrodPage.JPG

Your probably right Ben... in track use, the rpm of the engine spends much more time above 3000 rpm, than below it.. so we have a much higher rate of oil flow to the rockers/pushrod than in a street engine, which spends the majority of it's life below 3000 rpm. Apparently the higher spring pressures are not a factor in the race engine, the lack of lubrication in the street motor is what kills the mis-matched combo. I would say that would be a reasonable conclusion.

I would think ordering 1 and getting the lengths needed for intake and exhaust then ordering a set would be the way most ppl go. The fact that an adjustable rod could come unlock and unadjusted itself I would not like. The .040 head gasket change should be well within the area a hydraulic lift can operate. Normally for high rpm use alot of ppl only set them with about .025 preload, most street setups is about .050, maybe a touch more. but if you measure right you should be able to get it closer to .065 to .070 preload with the thinner gasket, then when swapping to the thicker be in the .025 to .030 preload and still be in the range of the lifters and only need 1 set if pushrods and not have to do the adjustable thing.

Hopefully jim will chime back and verify the range a hydraulic lifter can operate in on the street safely. Those numbers I cited are what I remember are clise to spec, but I don't make my living building engines it's a hobby for me
