Helo, I have been seeing a number of 72 GS's with the air intake grill surrounds painted black, instead of the body color. Can someone tell me if they should be black or body color to be correct. I always believed that body color was the right answer, but worth checking. Thanks

72's were black, all other years were body color

Thanks for that info. I guess it begs the next question - what kind of black. semi, gloss, other? Thanks

I think it's a semi gloss but I did the ones on my old SportWagon in gloss and they looked right snappy!

I thought there was another post on here about the 72's that could be black or body color? I think it said plant or date specific. Better check first.

If your car was made in Framingham, the scoops should be body color. All the other plants painted them black.

That explains why I have seen both, especially on cars that sport original paint and body panels. My car was built in Freemont CA, so that might argue for black. Any other Freemont cars out there from 1972 that can confirm the type of black used ? Thanks very much. Steve

My old Freemont built 72 GS-350 was black as well. On mine, they were a satin black, but I cant confirm that was correct finish.

Any other 72 GS owners out there with Freemont cars that can help me select the correct black for the air intake surrounds? Frankly wish they were body color, especially on a gold car since the black will really be a strong contrast. Thanks, Steve

my 72 gs is a fremont car. i repainted mine semi-gloss black in 2002 and of course left the chrome as is.

I have flint built 72 that has the factory untouched originals.
Ive had the car for 30 years and it is always inside.
They are and always have been gloss black . Hope this helps.

John, thanks. The plot thickens. I'm intrigued by the variation that exists, plant to plant. Even in teh early 70s you'd expect some level of consistency, especially since the dealer brochures are the same throughout the US and buyers might expect one thing and get another. Small issue, I know, but still. I heard back from another 72 owner with a rotisserie resto 72 and his was satin black. Any others out there? I hate to waste folks time on this little detail, but nice to get it right if I can. Thanks, Steve:3gears:

Mine is Flint built, Steve , and I'm going gloss black for the simple reason it's easier to keep them waxed and looking good.My car didn't come with any , so I've chased down some used ones.

As Duane has said, the Framingham plant did not get the memo on the color change. So they continued to make them body color, while the other plants did the change to black.

Jason , thanks. I missed that detail somewhere in this string. Sounds like gloss black is the factory black used, but some updates to satin have been made with good reviews. Probably will go with gloss. The guy whose gonna do some mild paint work on mine has an original 72, I'll be able to check his ( of course, it's probably a Framingham car by luck). Thanks for all the great info . I'll post photos when done. Steve
