    Another miracle needed..........

Well, Peter Simpson's prayers were answered with a positive report about his son Owen.

Looks like we need another miracle for Lon's better half. Praying for both families.

    Lon:

So sorry to hear that. Our prayers are big enough to include you and your family along with Owen, Pete, and his.

My older brother had a headon at full speed in a golf cart into a huge tree on Thursday. He took the steering wheel in the chest, head into the windshield, and knocked the wind out of him. He had a stroke a few years back and lost half his vision (has a total blind spot from center to the right). He was looking toward the left and never even saw it.

    Looks like he'll be fine.

    You just never know.

    Prayers are answered

    Ralph,

Thanks for posting this for me buddy. By the grace of God I able to type this while looking at my wife sitting on the couch! When Alyssa called me she said that Cindy had hit her head off the fence at the end of her run and she was being taken to the hospital via ambulance. Early reports from the ambulance crew to the emergency room nurse had them expecting something bad. Well, get this. In the going on 20 years we've been together I have never seen her wear anything but a cowboy hat and last night she put on our youngest daughters' riding helmet! When she came off the horse she hit the fence near the base of the skull and if it hadn't of been for the helmet taking the impact (and cracking!) Lord only knows what the outcome would of been (read: Christopher Reeves). She ending up just having a bad concussion and bruised shoulder and lost about a 1-1/2hr of memory, cat scan & x-rays showed no other injuries or broken bones. Thanks to all of my friends for the thoughts and prayers.

Wife saver's can come in all colors

but none as nice as green :TU: This was a basal skull hit and the helmet did it's job. If not for this extension who's to say what the outcome would of been.
Thanks for everything folks :beer .

    Lon,

Well, now you know exactly what to get her for Christmas! :TU: They also make chest protectors for riding and a lot of other safety gear.

For the 1st time in almost 40 years of riding, I'm considering a helmet. Keep hearing of too many accidents. I'd just use my full face race helmet, but the horses are freaked out by it  Pretty soon, I'll have more helmets than shoes!

Glad she is feeling better and send her my wishes for a quick recovery.

Friend of mine in California has broken something major in each of the last 3 years riding, jumping, etc. First her shoulder when thrown into a stone wall in Ireland, then the next year her collar bone and an arm into a tree, and last year some equipment problem caused one of her own big horses to come over backward on her and crack some ribs. So far nothing this year, but like she recently said, there's still 2 months to go. She just bought a new "3 day" horse and plans to show him pretty soon. Man, these things are big.

Dangerous hobby, but like the old cars and racing, it's a passion that you can't get enough of, let alone away from. Sure glad she's OK.

    Lon,

Glad to hear she is OK. Growing up, we never thought of wearing a helmet when riding a horse. Of course, my brother and I never were jumping horses either! I learned about helmets with our 3-wheeler. Within 5 minutes of that damn thing showing up, my brother thought he was Evil Kievel and tried jumping a ditch going into Dad's garden. Did not hurt anything, but did have a meeting of mass, my brothers mouth and the top of the windshield! :Dou: I have been putting PPE on since that time. Next helmet for racing is going to be a full face. Just because my uncle is an orthodontist, I don't need for him to make a new jaw and set of teeth! :eek2:

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. She is still having lingering effects and will so for a month according to the Dr. Had to go get her from work at lunch time yesterday because she felt her vision wasn't good enough to get home.
According to those who she has talked to, the run goes like this - heading into the first barrel she had her feet come out of the stirrups and instead of backing out of the run (like she would normally do) she continued on and as she came around the 3rd barrel she started to lose her seat in the saddle and slide down around the left side of the horse. The horse made a quick right turn when it got near the gate and it sling-shot (like an apple on the end of a stick) her into a corner post with the back of her head. THANK GOD for that helmet. The helmet company wants the helmet back but she told them she wants to use it as a teaching tool. She has already been tapped to give a speach about safety to 4-H kids at the horse quality assurance meeting coming up this spring.
    Again, THANKS
    Lon

Yesterday was not a good day for her. She couldn't stand or sit for very long due to a painful hip and spent most of the day crying. I took her to Buckhorn Arena last night to watch Alyssa ride and while we were there we got to see a video of her ride It was plain to see why she was having trouble with her hip. The way she landed she hit the ground hard with the right hip at the same time she moved the fence with her head & shoulder just showed how lucky she was it isn't worse. She is headed right now to get x-ray's on the hip to see if it is broke.
