I am swapping in a 350 out of a 71 Skylark into my 84 Cutlass which use to have the 3.8 v6, my question is can I use to stock alternator off the 71 Skylark? I tryed installing the 3.8's alternator but no dice, the mounting points were slightly different, and one of the mounting tabs was only about a quarter inch deep where as the 350's alternator is at least an inch deep. So can I run the 71 alternator, or is the another alternator that will swap in from a later model ? Thanks for any help Jason
It won't work. The problem is the 71 alternator requires an external voltage regulator, and yours has an internal one, so the wiring is very different. You will need to get an alternator for your application, but they are cheap and plentiful at any auto parts store. Make sure you specify the correct amperage also. Frank
What application would fit though? what year did they start using internally regulated alternators? did Buick 350's have the same bracketry by that point? So if anyone can tell me what car would have the alternator I need I would be really grateful. Thanks for the help so far Jason
I think in 72 they started using internally regulated alts... internally regualted alts will have to flat 2 wire plug with a single battery post on the back. You can buy the alt pigtail at most parts stores. A/C alts have 2 grove pulleys and non A/C have single.
