Well, I attempted to upgrade to the newer alternator on my '72 skylark - installed a new Year One engine harness while I was at it since the original was about past its prime. Now the car won't crank - engine lights come on with the key, when I turn it all the way to the start position, the 'hot' light comes on.

I used a new conversion plug, wired the #1 wire into the old blue coming from the original alt plug, the #2 wire went to the BAT terminal on the new alternator, as per instructions.

I do have correct voltage at the alternator terminal and with the key on, 3+ volts at the blue and brown spliced wires which came from the original voltage regulator (they act as alternator exciter wires when connected). Everything's wired correctly at the starter as well. Also installed new battery cables while everything was apart.

Any thoughts out there as to the problem? Car fired right up every time under the old points system :Dou:

I would retrace my steps, hook it up the old way, hopefully it will work, and then try again. Your obviously not getting any voltage down to the "s" terminal on the starter.

AAAH! the sweet sound of a purring 350 fills my garage once again. Only turned out to be a loose connection - seems I bumped the purple loose when I reinstalled the starter. The new late-model alternator I installed works flawlessly and a Pertronix-filled distributor is next up :beer
