Anti-Lock brakes in '69?

I was looking through my '70 Assembly manual last night and came across 2 pages showing what appears to be an anti-lock brake system for the Riviera, dated 3/69.
Is this an option that appeared on any cars? Or, was it something slated for production but never made it?

    I found it interesting.

    Oops!
I scanned the same page twice!:Dou:
    Here is one page.

It's the first time I hear about that. Interesting!

Can you copy and post the part that describes how it works? I just wonder how the unit detects individual wheel rotation and then does it's business. I'd bet it's not very reliable but who knows? Pretty cool.......:Brow:

I can't see the scan very well, but will guess it is for the Max-Track which was a traction-control system.

I don't think so. Max Trac wasn't available before 1971 and aside from the speed sensor, I didn't see any parts similar to Max Trac parts in this scan. The big can with what looks like vacuum hoses look a bit like what was used on Chrysler's early anti-lock system (used on the early seventies Imperial).

Buick and Oldsmobile got together for an antilock brake system installed on I believe a dozen 69 Rivieras and some unmentioned number of Olds cars. There was a blurb about it in the Riview aways back I remember. Not sure if any are still in existance anymore.

Does this system use a driveshaft speed sensor like the old Lincoln system?

I posted this a week ago, and was beginning to think there was no interest in it or, I had a communicable disease that made everyone stay away.

    Erik,
I have the scans on my computer at home. I will send them to you later on.
And I will scan the 2nd page that I missed.

    Joe,
It doesn't describe how it works, just gives me a couple of diagrams.
Looks like it was designed by Rube Goldberg.

It definately is not part of the Max Trac.
I can see where lines run to the master cylinder

I finally got around to viewing your images tonight (I'm on a VERY slow dial up connection).

That definitely is a primitive anti-lock brake system. It seems to be very simple, and I'll bet if one still exists as optional equipment on a '70 Riv it still works. I doubt if we'll ever see one still in existance though........but damn, that would really be cool now, wouldn't it! :Brow: Imagine trying to explain that one at a car show.........:Dou:

Thanks for sharing Dale, and for posting the readable drawings Erik. :TU:

Along the same line of "primitive" safety equippment: I remember back in '69 or '70 my dad was given an Impala to drive that had an early airbag system in it.

We weren't sure if we should be (a) pleased that he was given a special car to drive or (b) bummed because they thought he was likely to run into something...

I remember when my Father was ready to trade his '71 Toronado in on a new/newer one, the salesman was showing him a '74 Toronado that was equipped with an air bag.
My Father said something along the lines of "GM has a hard enough time making known technologies work, I'm not going to be a guinea pig for them on the unproven ones."

Doesn't the 1970 Buick full-line sales catalog mention an anti-lock brake system (not Max-Trac)?
As well as the "auto level" system which was avail on B, C and A bodies (not sure of Riv's).

Earliest airbags I've seen were in the 70's Eddie Albert movie "Moving Violation". Its a Dirty Mary/Crazy Larry knock-off. One of hte cop cars has one deploy on impact.

    Side question.

Are the drawing/schematics in this post from the regular Chassis Manual for a given year (1969 or 1970)?

I purchased a CD program off eBay a while back called Detroit Iron (e-publishing vendor) for 1970 Buicks ... all CD rom based and supposedly has the full Chassis, Body, etc. manuals and more.

I have played with it a very little bit but have noticed some really nice info on the CD ... of course the same as in the books but right on your laptop or screen. Anyway, are any of you familiar w/ this info and are any of you getting the factory info from a product like this instead of the old books?

    Are you sure it wasn't a 1973?

In 1973, GM had a fleet of Impalas with an Oldsmobile dash and dual airbags to test them.

The next year, they were offered as an option on full size Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs.

Here's a picture of a 1973 experimental Impala, I have seen two of these and they were both green with a black interior.

I recently removed the driver's side airbag in my '75 Electra to repair a sticking horn contact.

Here are spare parts I got on eBay a few years ago, these airbags came from a 1974 Electra
