Does anyone live near Lake Lanier, specifically on the east side of the lake? My wife is interviewing for a job at Carters in Braselton. It's not a done deal, more of a curiosity thing. I like where I am in WV, but if they gave her the money she said she'd need, it'd be tough to turn down :) Just scoping out the area right now. The only feedback we received was you don't want to live in Athens. Not sure if there's a real basis for that or just one persons opinion. Looks like there's some hot boats that run around the lake, one of my area criteria, the other is a drag strip. I know Atlanta Dragway is nearby, but not sure of it's future. Are there many other 1/4 mile tracks that are decent? Thanks for any feedback.

I grew up in Gainesville, went to college in Athens and worked in Cornelia. I live in Oxford now. Athens is a great college town, but Saturday traffic is difficult on home game weekends. Year One is in Braselton and host shows frequently. Atlanta Dragway is in Commerce and is healthy I think. It’s near pastures and outlet malls, not neighborhoods, and has a lot of buffer space so I doubt it’ll be pushed out anytime soon. I think it’s the only strip around. Road Atlanta is in Braselton; it’s a very active road course. Lake Lanier is huge and gets very busy in warm weather; old timers gripe about how busy it is. I really like Georgia in general and suburban to rural North Georgia a lot. Stay away from Gwinnett county; it’s about to be gridlocked by people moving in. If you’re house shopping, look for chicken houses and don’t buy near them! They stink like hell, aren’t going anywhere, and realtors know which way the wind is blowing when they show (or don’t) houses-beware.
As long as you don’t move here and then complain about it being ‘Georgia’ you should really like it. (Some people move here for low taxes and home prices, then complain about lack of service and start voting for things that raise taxes and prices). Any specific questions, ask or PM. I imagine BYoung will chime in soon-he’s closer than I am.

I've lived in Gainesville since 1982 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Patrick accurately mentioned all the car and lake stuff. If you keep your time on the lake at the north end of the lake you will be fine. It's the southern part that gets invaded by Atlanta folk. The weather is just right, 3 months of each season. Gainesville has a spectacular Hospital, pretty darn decent eateries, beautiful land, reasonable housing and taxes, and generally nice people. Banks County might be a possibility for your family considering the commute to Braselton. Plenty of rural land and a short drive to Gainesville or Commerce, just depends on your needs and what you want in a home place. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

And we get convertible weather in January! It may be only once a week, but I’ll take it!

Interesting. There’s a lot of empty pastureland around there; I’d bet it’s cheaper to buy land without a profitable dragstrip than with one.

Bet that dragstrip has power and water and sewage......do the rural areas have that ?

They often don’t, but, like Newton County, where I live, many municipalities are very friendly to business and will build infrastructure for free or cheap to lure big companies.

And what utilities are there are adequate for a dragstrip but not a factory.

If someone’s willing to pay the asking price I’m sure it’ll sell, but I also think the asking price is ‘all the money’, and any big manufacturer will be looking at the whole area. There’s a lot of other open land, a lot of highway access (a lot of it less congested than the 441/I-85 bridge) and a lot of officials willing to sweeten a deal. We’ll see!
