    Skiing

Im planning on going out to Aspen, Colorado on the beginning of January to go snowboarding with some old friends from school its a ton of fun but those boots kill my feet. Thats a heck of a work out too for someone not used to 13,000 foot mountains!! like me. If you never went before I recommend taking atleast 1 lesson. It helped me.

Live for it! we're just 34 minute away from the lift. We try to ski 3 or 4 days/nights a week. Bring on the snow!!!

Too bad you have to drive a little further to get some higher altitude stuff, but you gotta like going more evenings than not in a week.

My wife and I are going to Whistler for Thanksgiving Weekend. We leave a week from Thursday and come home Sunday. That's their opening weekend, if they have the snow.

I've been skiing for about 25 years. My wife just took it up last year and she's already been to Whistler, Stevens Pass, and Mt Bachelor (Bend, OR).

I love going to the tubing hills in colorado the hill gets so many people going down on it you cant walk up it 10 feet because its solid ice. Go to Winter Park in Colorado for a great time.

    Steve,
ya, it kinda sucks up at our little pass but you can make turns and every once in a while you get the arctic express mixing with our marine air and DUMPO you've got a face full of pow. 3 years ago my family and I took it up after 15years off due to a torn ACL, money and being chicken $#!+. Our first year back we went to Batchlor, Big White, Jackson Hole, Stevens pass, Mt Hood and Schwietzer. We made up for lost time.

    Ski the fall line!

I haven't been able to afford to go skiing in years, and don't know anyone else who'd go.

Have fun, and don't break anything.

    You guys are killiing me!!

I use to go once a week when I lived in Denver.
Then I went for about 1 week every year after I moved back to KC.(can you say flat.........)
Haven't been for 3 or 4 years now.
Even updated some of my equipment a couple of years ago, but still haven't got to use it.

I really don't realize how much I miss it until I get talking/thinking about it.

That's why I was so glad when my wife enjoyed it after her first year. For her birthday in September I bought her equipment of her own. Now we can take vacations that involve skiing.

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

You guys are lucky - out of all the things I used to do, Skiing is the one thing I miss most. I still have dreams about it. I was quite good at one point and even taught and lead tour groups but that seems like a previous life now......

I've had 3 surgeries on my left knee finally having my ACL reconstructed with the last one but there's no cartlidge left in it - its at about 85% now and Im scared to get back on the slopes again for fear of tearing it up more.....again....

For those of you that have transitioned from Ski's to Boarding - do you think its less stressful on the knees ?? What scares me about boarding is you're locked into them - no breakaway.

I've water Skiied quite a bit since the knee overhaul and Im much less confident on two ski's than when I drop one and slalom - thats why Im thinking Boarding may be a way for me to enjoy being on the Mountain again.

Of course it wouldn't be the extreme black diamond stuff and BIGGG AIR jumps like I used to do.....but I can leave that behind

    Thoughts ????

  18. I ski and ride. Been skiing since I was 3, and it's been 21 fun years. However, I've been doing more snowboarding than skiing the last 10 years. My parents have a townhouse that's ski in/ski out in western NY, I'm up most weekends throughout the winter. Also been to Colorado, Utah, and California. If I had vacation time in the spring I'd be going to Alaska with some friends in March, I may still try to sneak that one in.

  19. A lot of people freak out about the no release on the boards. Look at it this way, what's going to see more stress- one leg on a board or two legs on a board?

If you fall the board has much less leverage on your body because it's shorter overall and the tip and tail are much shorter compared to a ski. So when you fall the board will follow you and not twist your legs nearly as much as a ski would. While I've heard of knee injuries (usually dislocated kneecaps) on boards it's caused by someone falling on their knees, not twisting them. I wear kneepads for rollerbladeing or skateboarding under my snowpants to take care of that.

The other thing about a board is you float over the snow more than you would on skis. So when there's choppy broken snow you won't be pulled all over the place. Even at the end of a powder day you still have fun because the broken surface is still smooth as early morning powder. Try going out in the afternoon on skis and you're in for a fight.

Riding does require a fair amount of leg strength, but you'll get over this in time. Eat a good breakfast before you go out for your first day, you'll need your energy. As with learning anything you'll discover muscles you never knew you had before. Just approach it with a good attutude, the right equipment (I can't stress getting good boots and bindings enough), and get the right protective gear, chiefly a helmet and kneepads. I'd also recommend rollerblade wrist guards to wear under or over your gloves as you're wrists are the most venerable part of your body.

I've taught people to ride in under 2 hours, but most often it takes an afternoon of learning to get it down right. Find someone who knows how to ride to teach you, you'll probably pick it up quicker and learn some of the inside tricks. If you can't do that then take a lesson from the ski area. Don't try to pick it up on your own, or you'll be hurting twice as much at the end of the day.

    Good luck!
