Hi there, I run a 73 Electra 225 here in Lincolnshire U.K The car has a kilometer speedo in it, as it was exported to Spain from new. if anyone has got the time and feels like helping out, I could really do with a MPH type. If you can help, please let me know and we can sort the rest out from there. Many thanks, Dave.

I know of a yard that may have one. It will be at least a month before I can go there, but I put it on my list to look for. I will contact you if I can scare one up for you.

    Dave,

I have a spare MPH speedo here, maybe we can swap them ?
Does yours have the optional trip meter and speed alert ?

Last week this 1973 Electra came in for parting out, is there anything you need for your car ?
It's much cheaper to ship parts from the Netherlands to the UK.

Hi Erik, I would be happy to swap the KMH for the MPH speedo, yes mine has the trip meter and the speed indicator (adjustable) Mine is a four door type 225 so I guess not too many parts would be suitable but thanks for the offer. How do you want to do the swap of the speedo's ? Thanks again, Dave.

    Dave,

I just checked the one I have as a spare, but there's no trip meter and speed alert needle on it. Let me know if you're still interested in it.

I was also wondering if you have change the gear drive in the transmission if you do a swap like this from KM to MPH ? Or maybe they're using the same gear, and only the scale on the speedo is different.

Another option is to remove the plastic cover on your Electra and paint the markings for 30MPH/48 KM, 40MPH/65 KM, 60 MPH/96KM and 70MPH/112 KM in a bright flouricent colour ?

Hi Erik, I'm not worried about the trip or speed alert being there, it's not really important thanks. I've already made a simple removable cover for the dial but it's not that accurate. I think the gearing will be the same in the transmission, as you say, the scale is probably different on the dial. How do you want to do the exchange ??? Maybe the headlight switch from the wrecked 225 might be a good one, when I have my lights on main beam, after a while they start to flicker, I think the switch has a built in fusable link or similar, might be faulty ? Hear from you soon, cheers, Dave.

    Dave,

    Contact me at:

    buickriviera@gmail.com

So we can change out addresses, I will send my spare speedo first.
If something goes wrong in the mail, no harm is done since we both still have our original speedo in the car.

Install it in the Electra and look what's happening, if you're happy with it: send the KM speedo to my address, if not: return the MPH speedo to my address.

You can buy those light switches new from an automotive shop in England, they're made by Siemens, Germany.

Hi Dave. There is a thermo fuse in the headlight switch, however, I recon that the original head lights are replaced to European, (or British standard, as you, sorry, drive on the wrong side of the road).

The European head lights, (H-4), are most likely to have a higher wattage than the original American type. This will force a higher current through the switch and cause the lights to flicker.

I have installed two after-market 12 volt light relay's, one for the low beam & the other for high.
That solve the problem, as only a very low current are now going through your original light switch.

Hi there Per, many thanks for the tip about using relays to sort the 'flicker' problem, I will get that fixed soon. It's not us that drive on the wrong side, it's everybody else Hah ! Well, except for New Zealand, Australia, India..................... But it makes for very interesting driving over here with a 'left hooker' and when I have no passenger for overtaking eyes, that's a right laugh, NOT ! Cheers guys, happy Rumblings. Dave.
