My '67 GS400 was pretty well optioned when new but it doesn't appear that it was ordered with any wheel options. I think this means it originally come with 14x6 steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps.

I am considering switching out the rally wheels on the car for steel wheels and dog dish caps.

Does anyone have a photo of a '67 GS400 with steel wheels/dog dish caps they can post? Bonus points for a photo of a the wheels on a convertible.

    Thanks.

Does your car have power disc brakes? If so, only the sport wheel with the trim ring will fit it. Finding a '67 GS with dog dish caps will be really tough, I'm thinking.

Nope, it has power drum brakes up front. My guess is the original owner was planning on getting aftermarket wheels right away so they didn't spend the extra $$ on wheel upgrades when they ordered the car.

Boy, do those doggy dish caps look great on an all black GS! I'd do that in a minute if I had one. :)

Do you have some documentation that shows how your car was optioned originally?

Here is my GS400 convertible with a set of steel wheels installed (it is an original dosc brake car but I run these steel wheels at the track). The wheels are supposed to be blue on a blue car but they looked terrible since the fresh paint on the wheels clashed with the decades-old faded paint. So I painted them black like would be on a black, white, or ivory car.

The 2nd photo is one of the rare Special GS sedan cars with correctly painted wheels.

    The 3rd & 4th pics are a friend's Ivory GS400.

Thanks for the photos guys. I kind of like the way it looks.

Yes, I have the original sales order for the car. It shows all the options on the car including redline tires but no mention of wheel options. I haven't found a build sheet yet but I haven't really looked too hard.

I have a set of NOS dig dish caps I picked up along the way, now just need to find a set of wheels. I am leaning towards a set of 15 inch steel wheels from the Parts Place instead of the original 14 inch steel wheels. I need to decide if I am going for stock-looking but with bigger tires or 100% stock. Anybody have experience with the Parts Place replacement steel wheels?

Sounds as though your car did indeed leave the factory with standard wheels and small hubcaps.

Black steel rims that are on my convertible above are 15" because they are my track wheels and I have to use 15" runs so I can use sticky tires. My wheels are GM 15x6 on the front and the rears are 15x7 that I had custom made because a set of stock GM 15x7 would not fit (hit the lip of the wheel opening and I was not willing to bend or cut).

So if you plan to run 15x7 on the rear I HIGHLY recommend that you measure extremely carefully because if you buy a wheel that has the standard offset like a stock 15x7 GM wheel it will rub if you still have the stock width rearend. I learned this lesson the hard way after buying used GM 15x7 rims, blasting them, painting them, and mounting new tires only to put them on the car and realize that I couldn't even drive it.

Now if the offset is matched perfectly to your car you can go up to 15x8 on the rear without a problem. I have a set of lightweight aluminum wheels for my car that are 15x8 with p255 MT Drag radials and they fit without issues because the wheels are shallow on the front and deep on the rear.

One last thing, according to page O-2.1 of the factory assembly manual for the '67 GS, all cars with standard hubcaps had wheels painted the same color as the body except for cars painted Artic White or Ivory and those cars got gloss black wheels.

Thanks for the info Gary. By the way my car was originally the same exterior color combo as your blue convertible. Aquamarine Blue with black top. The previous owner painted it dark blue before I bought it. Since the car is the wrong color I will probably leave the wheels black for now.

I have a set of 15 inch rally wheels on it now, I will have to check and see what offset they are. Plenty of space for the tires on the rear on those wheels so the offset must be right.

How did you have the offset modified on your wheels? Cut the welds at the center section, re-position and re-weld?

I believe there are places that can do exactly as you describe but in the past I've had new steel wheels with specific backspacing made by Stockton Wheel and another company but can't remember the name at th moment. Both companies did a good job in my opinion.
