while the books and radio plays rocked... i have already heard the movie bites. "MJ Simpson, who has 'been studying and documenting the life and career of Douglas Adams for more than 20 years', has written a very in-depth review and plot analysis of the Hitchhiker's movie." This one does not contain spoilers. http://planetmagrathea.com/shortreview.html THIS ONE DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS http://planetmagrathea.com/longreview1.html i haven't read either, but i'm already disappointed. I'll stick to the book thanks. from the short review... "Really bad" "vastly, staggeringly, jaw-droppingly bad" "bad on a big scale" "bad on a small scale" "staggeringly unfunny" "unfunny, pointless crap" "an abomination" "amazingly, mindbogglingly awful" "a terrible, terrible film"
Well, unless it is going to be a trilogy,or more, they of course are going to have to butcher the book in order to make the movie.I still want to see it,I remember watching the tv movie as a kid,and it was pretty cool. Now I just have to get around to reading the book.
absolutely nothing beats the book. if possible get the audiobook read by Douglas Adams himself. made all the difference. available on audible.com
Is this a work of semi-factual info ... or full on fiction? Similar to Art of Zen and Motorcycle Maintenance? I couldnt finish it coz it twisted my brain too hard...fish
Douglas Adams (the author) had been working on the movie before he died. Also, the original radio plays differ from the books, which differ from the BBC series, etc., all in some important ways. Adams saw it as a sort of living book, and refers to the differences and reasons in the More Than Complete Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. I'm expecting it to be different, I just hope it doesn't suck. I've been trying to get my best friend to read the 5.5 book trilogy since I heard they were filming a new movie. She's not done it yet - and reading all those books might take her, what, a whole week? Its very easy reading.
He had been working on it for a long time, different scripts, etc. Studio hated each script and he didn't wanna compromise some parts... turned into a pissing match basically. It is true he did PART of the script, but realize that he had zero say so in the final product. Granted the director was a friend of his, but regardless it sounds like it's missing the quirky humor that Adams' had. In all likelihood the movie will indeed... suck. I won't see it, i don't want it to ruin my great perception of the book. Also I don't think it was all the books combined, it seems to be just the first movie maybe a few bits and peices from other books but sticking to the first book.
After finally reading a few reviews, I retract my optimism. I will probably still see it, though doubt I'll take my best friend unless she reads the books first - I prefer she has the right impression of it, or none at all. Geez, imagine having to explain to people how the BBC series is superior to the big production, and not just because it is more true to the books.
