Hey Guys-Anyone know approximate weight of a 455 short block? I need to know will be shipping one soon. Thanks! Jeff
Define your 'short block'. Some folks have different ideas about what it means. Block, crank and caps, pistons and con rods? Or what? Without exhaust manifolds, my memory says a whole 455 with iron heads and iron intake weighs 616 pounds.
Jim, I think 616 is for a functional engine. (carb, air cleaner, exh manifolds, etc) I know the carb is 8-10 lbs, air cleaner is 5 lbs, manifolds are 20 lbs each, flex plate is 10 lbs, water pump is 5 lbs, timing cover is 15 lbs, chain and gears 5 lbs, damper is 12 lbs, pan is 8 lbs. I know two guys, can pick-up a short block (my brother and I did it). To me a short block is block, crank, rods, pistons, oil pan, damper, timing cover, chain and gears, flex plate, main caps. So...... I think 400 is a lil high. I would figure 250-275. :TU:
Hmmm I'll say George's 2nd estimate is about right. :Brow: Do we win a prize if were're right?
I'm going with George The short block in this case is a 455 minus the carb, intake, alt, power steering stuff,brackets,pulleys,heads-So around 275 sounds about right.I might tell'em 300 lbs. just to be safe.I have no way of weighing it. Thanks Jeff
I shipped a short block 455 recently, it was 123,8 kilo. (I could lift it on the scale on my own  ) Get used to the standard of the world, and do your maths......
Fyi They will weigh it, you can be sure of that. :Smarty: Also, they go in increments of 100#'s. So if you are 301#'s (including the skid), you will be charged for 400# price. Or at least that is how all the trucking Co's do it that we deal with. :bglasses:
I still have an original crate motor here in the GM box and it says it weighs 318lbs.this is a complete engine minus heads and intake.
Nice to see someone who speaks more than standard mesure  123.8 KG X 2.2 = 272.36LBS George you are right on the money ( bowing head not worthy of you ) KEN
