For my ongoing 455 build for a driver / tow car: I've collected an MSD 6 box, and had Dave Ray rebuild the distributor into an MSD trigger (he does NICE work, btw). I understand MSD boxes are pretty reliable, but I'd really hate to get stranded 50 miles from home on the way back from a lake with two hot/tired kids...any ideas on a backup plan, like a way to wire a GM hei module in there if need be?
Just throw a stock points distributor in the trunk, James. If you ever need it just pop out the trigger and put in the stock unit. Time it by ear and clamp it and it will get you home. - Bill
Could always keep a spare MSD box in the trunk. Should be able to find someone upgrading from a 6al or something.
Dave's HEI is just that, an MSD Pickup wired to a GM 4 pin HEI module. The 2 wires off the pickup go to one end of the module, the other 2 pins off the module go to the coil I think. Contact Dave, and ask for a wiring diagram, and tell him why. I don't think you'll need it though, MSD boxes are pretty reliable. They do go, but usually right away.
