My power brake booster failed in my 65 Skylark today. It is just sucking air so I assume the diaphram went. Can these be rebuilt with a kit or do i need a new one.If i need one anyone have a spare real quick.........Thanks........Bruce.
I am kinda in the position that the 65 is the only car we have to drive right now and sending it out may not be an option. Can it be done myself at home?......Thanks for the link though........Bruce.
Honestly, I'd suggest just buying a new one. You should be able to change it within an hour, and it shouldn't be too terribly expensive from your local parts store. The hardest part is diconnecting the bolts under the dash. And a quick tip : don't lose the push pin that's in between the master cylinder and the booster. When you pull the master cylinder away from the booster, pull that pin out and don't lose it. I don't know if you can even buy that piece anywhere. Good luck. -Josh
Thanks for the insight,I appreciate it.If I call my local auto arts store and ask for one for a 65 Skylark they are probably going to shrug and say huh! But I will try....Thanks.
does anyone sell rebuilt boosters with original looking cad plating? i'm looking for one for my 69 riv with disc brakes. thanks
Check with places like OPG,yearone maybe.I see them on Ebay all the time but they are about 250.00 reconditioned I believe.I would think the A Body ones sre the same for the Rivs but not 100% sure.....
Please whatever you do make sure, if you get a rebuilt booster that you insure it is correct for your car. I have recently been through hell with a rebuilt booster, supposedly correct for a 66 skylark, that was either defective or not really for the car. I went to the rebuilder and was told it required 18" of vaccum to work, when a stock Buick 300 only has 13" new. I was told the only only difference between a 65/66 booster and 67 booster was the length of the push rod, so I bought a used 67 booster. The rod is the only difference! Changed out the rod and installed the old, used booster, bought off e-bay and it works perfectly. So, my two cents worth would be to rebuild what you have, or source a correct rebuilt, not a will fit from one of the major parts chain stores, or go find a used mid 60's booster and try that. This site has some guys with a great deal of knowledge about the brakes on our cars, that's where I found out about the push rod difference. Lastly, I was told by a local brake shop that he often has to go through a couple of rebuilt boosters before he gets a good one. Good luck!!
