All 4 drums, brake shoes and wheel cylinders are in very good shape but my brakes are very hard and I have to really bear down to stop the car. I suspect the booster. I have very good vacuum going into the booster and I disconnected the vacuum line about 15 minutes after the engine was off and I heard an audible hissing of air so that tells me that the booster is probably not leaking vacuum. When I step on the brake pedal and turn engine on, the brake pedal does not sink down like on my other autos. There is a fine coating of brake fluid on the master cylinder and the brake booster but I can find no leaks. Does this sound like I should just replace both the Booster and Master Cylinder?
My wagon had the same hard pedal, and I started with the master. That did solve the problem for me. Tony
Our project car has the same problem, hard pedal, car barely stops, but everything is brand new. Any suggestions where to start here? o No:
Hard pedal, car wont stop= bad brake booster or cracked vacuum like going to booster. Do you have vacuum at the booster? If you need a booster I have one.
Reman boosters are available at any parts stores cheap- like 90 bucks with a master already installed. not bad when they are listed for like 250 in year one. they function fine and look correct since they are original units rebuilt. paint to match.
Brake booster is a new rebuilt unit. I'll check vacuum issues when I get a chance. Thanks and God bless. :TU:
Just because it's new does not mean it isn't defective. I bought 2 boosters that were defective, same hard pedal. The 3rd one was good. If the pedal does not drop when you start the engine, the booster is no good.
break i have had the same problem on my wildcat. my breaks are very weak. i have replaced everything. even my lines. i will try out that break booster and see if that was the problem also. tell me if anybody tried it and it help out their rides.
I've found that if you have a hard pedal after changing the master cylinder it's because you did not bleed all the air from it before installing. ou: Make sure the bleed tubes are submerged in the bowls when pumping the piston and just keep pumping till all the air is out of the tubes. :TU:
either they are way out of adjustment or they are bleeding pressure off somewhere in the system. possible blown master cylinder, bad lines or wheel cylinders. is the car using any fluid? a soft pedal means you have en pressure for one of the above reasons. :TU:
