Got a little bonus from work and was thinking of replacing my balancer. What is the best cost effective one to get??? I think mine has slipped, when #1 cyl. is at TDC the balancer marks are not even close... ou: ou: Michael

Check this link. If you have yours rebuilt remove the weights and note their position before sending it out. http://v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=29081&highlight=vibration
Hi Mike.I went with Damper Dudes in CA.They did a good job, but this has been a bit of a controversial issue with some of the guys.Seems that they sometimes had the timing mark offset when they vulcanized some of them. There still might be a few past threads on this.Later,Tony.
TA sells OEM replacement balancers. I believe you can have the new one "match balanced" to your old one. Or just place your weights into the new balancer in the same location. But you will probably not be balanced any more.
Ok, just read the link that MandM provided. Maybe Ill just leave well enough alone. There is no vibration problem, the timing marks don't line up. What I ment by "cost effective"...is... I do not need a thousand dollar balancer, the car never sees the strip, slicks or above 5800 rpm. But if there was a better alternative to stock that was affordable (under $350) I would look into it. Now if I purchased a stock one, should I get it "match balanced" to the old one??? And how about a ROMEC??? And I thought buy one and slap it on... ou: ou: ou:
Look at this photo. The outer ring is "heavier" on one side. That balances the crank etc. The "internal" weights in the outer ring fine balance your motor. If the ring slips or is rebuild off key you are out of balance for a normal 455. If your internal weights are missing "your" 455 will be out of balance. I think if you sent your balancer to the dudes they would get it right for a "cost effective" amount. I am sure they have got some grief over 455 balancers and will spend the extra time to get it right the first time. Just pull the weights or write a letter stating your concerns. Take a photo to be sure. They said they would and could make mine right. I just went ahead and did it myself. Mine was so bad it was grinding on the timing cover. I guess what I am trying to say is, you are out of balance if the ring has spun. It could rattle the bearings. I know mine is far from perfect. HTH John
TDC compression or exhaust? TDC #1 piston comes up at two cam locations. I believe you tested for TDC #1 compression when your motor was on TDC compression #6 (TDC exhaust #1). Likelyhood of balancer "spinning" way out of balance and not launching off the engine: Me getting my engine back together this year. Try your TDC test again. This time employ the services of the distributor rotor. You can't have a badly out of balance damper and no engine vibes.
