Quick question. I need to replace the ball joints on my convert  Question is do I need to compress the coil spring to remove and install the new joints?

OK, I tried the "weight of the car" on the lower control arm. When I have the block on a jack, the car goes up with the jack. Should I block under the control arm and remove the jack stand supporting the frame to get more weight on the spring or just track down a spring compressor? which is better, internal or external?

Remove the shock and use an internal compressor.

    Todd:

In our area, some of the national chain auto parts stores offer tool rentals, either free or very cheap. I've done the job both ways - with the spring compressor and with the weight of the car. My suggestion is to use the compressor - it's easier and safer. Especially if the tool is available.
