Hey guys, building an 83 regal, with a 455 .060 over, some cool goodies... not sure about rearend tho, don't realy have the money for a GN rear, nor can i find one. i've got an open 7.5 inch, 26 spline rear..... what's my best options for gearing up only to mid 3's, and posi.... that and also what's the biggest tires i can fit in there without rubbing or having to flare the fenders? Thanks in advance for thelp guys. -Brendan
gbodyparts.com has gn rears and is closer to you. you could get a 3 series gear and a eaton posi, rear cover girdle will hold up for a while but if you are pushing the hp it will give out. slicks will be hard on it too. you can get some 3 series gears from s-10/jimmys/ta/z28 and astro vans 4 cyl s-10s will have deepest gears,or try ebay i have a t-type body with rear im tring to get rid of but im in chicago i have 255 60 r15 on the rear of my gn with 8 in weldrims have had 295-50r15 tires on mine but i do have some lift on the rear springs otherwise the might rub. take a look at the gbodyparts.com website and look up the custom widen grand nat rims and look at the size of the tire/rim combo on there(pics) size will make a difference depending on the offset of the rims you plan to use
Don't run slicks If you haven't got the money for a hearty rearend such as the GN or a ford 9" conversion, see if you can find an aftermarket posi just so both tires turn at the same time in the same direction. I have even run a spool, not good for tire wear but effective and relatively cheap. Regardless, with a 7.5 gear set don't run sticky tires i.e. slicks or street radials at a well prepared dragway or you will be likely to start breaking parts or twisting axles. If your engine build is a mild setup and you plan on strickly street use you can probably get away with the 7.5 and a set of street radial tires. Weekender :TU:
was just checking parts for sale theres 8.5 rearend in that section for what it would cost to put yours together maybe less
The turbo 8.5"/3.42:1 rear is probably the way to go, and gbody parts should have quite a few on hand. I'm running 245/50/16's all the way around on my Regal with no clearance issues at all
