Is it not uncommon when cold starting and a long cool down period to hear maybe three seconds of a bearing knock? A couple of friends also have Buick 350s and they say that is normal on these engines. This engine has 56k original miles and has had religous oil changes and is extremely clean inside. Any input here?
I hear it for ~1 second (3 quiet click click clicks) and thats it... and only on start up on cold days when the choke revs it high... lots of factors.
I have 113k on mine and never hear bottom end noise no matter how long it has sat. After sitting the winter, I will usually get about 5 seconds of lifter/rocker clatter after the first start, but not unless it sits for 4-5 months. Mike
no noise here on startup or shutdown...it isn't uncommon for a carbed motor to maybe miss a little bit on cold start, but i'd be weary of an actual 'knock'.
my 71 skylark 350 with 130k. thats right 130k. knocks for about 1 sec then stops.what does this mean?
Put an oil pressure gauge on that motor! It most likely is having trouble building pressure. Remember that the oil light goes off at very little pressures so don't count on that for anything. My car recently started knocking a little bit on start-up, then a little while later my oil light came on at idle, then came on all the time. I'm just gonna pull the motor for a complete rebuild, but I think my problem is the oil pickup. But it could be alot of things.... Get a gauge on there and see if you have adaquete pressure. Remember, there is no such thing as a "normal engine knock", unless it's a ford...
Noisey 350 The stock (never rebuilt) 350 I just pulled from my 69 GS would bleed down oil pressure after sitting overnight. In the morning it would knock(lower end) for 1-3 seconds every time until oil pressure would build up. It was this way for 14 years since I owned it with 140K on it now. It might have gotten a little worse lately but never gave me any trouble. Jake
