When my 1972 455 is warmed or should say hot the starter acts weak, acting as needing move amperage. I need to check to see if there is a shield missing first. If it is a starter needing to be replaced any suggestions, stock or performance up grade. Engine is basically stock.
I ran into the same issue.. didn't have the issue before, but now with headers, probably gets too hot. I put a heat shield over mine just this past week. Not too sure if solved problem yet, havnt driven much
I'm very happy with my Robb Mc starter. Might be over kill for most. A stock mini starter from a 1995 Buick Roadmaster LT1 350 will get the job done. https://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/starter_home.html https://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/buick_starter.html
I also installed the aluminum mini LT1 starter on my motor after it was built. Also replaced the stock heat shield. Cranks fast either hot or cold even with 22 degrees of initial timing.
I started having the same issue with my starter out of the blue a few weeks ago. I'm going to try the heat wrap first to see if that helps.
