What is the best (free) software to compress AVI files so they are not HUGE.

For example, you could have a 1 MegaByte BMP picture, bring it up in MS Paint (or another photo utility), save it as a JPG file, and the size is reduced by 90%.

Does any software exist to do this to AVI files (recorded on my wife's digital camera)?

    TIA :bglasses:

    Marco,

AVI files are huge as you know. I think you have to convert them to MPEG1 or MPEG2 to reduce the size (that is what I have done).
What is your final goal, burn them to a CD or DVD?

The only problem is when you convert them you may lose some of the quality. I am only a novice at doing this so there may be a better way.

I do not know of any freeware out there to do this but I may be able to help you :Brow:

    DIVX baby DIVX.

its the dvd pirateing standard. 2 gig. dvd will compress down to oh.. about 700 mb with audio.

www.divx.com there are some other places to look for encoders.

it will still be an AVI file but with diffrent compression.

    Thanks Mike -

My intention is be to put some video on the 'net so both my family and my wife's family will have no problems downloading them with a 56K connection.

Absolute finite quality is not that important. Getting a 10MB (60 second) file down to a reasonable size is :TU:

    Thanks Nate!

I actually found something on the 'net (I forgot the freeware name) that turned my 10MB file into 3.7 MB. It's good, but I need better.

    2 GB to 700 MB? :eek2:

Definitely worth looking into this DIVX compression :TU:

You can try Virtual Dub or its hack, Nandub. Forget where to get it, and its not too user friendly, but you can really control the file size and quality of the resulting AVI.

Divx is the best codec to use with it, for a combination of file size and quality.
