My friends and I are betting on something here. And I searched the internet but could not find the info I needed. So you guys tell me. Is the Buick 350 the same as an olds 350 and also for the buick and olds 455 are they the same? If they are not the same what are the differences. More replies the better!!!! Also pictures would be nice.

    Thanks,

    Brett

    HUGE differences

    Buick - front mounted distributor
    Olds - rear distributor

Both have the same tranny bolt pattern, and thats about it.

I believe the Olds oil fill cap is on the timing cover and the Buick is on the valve cover.

Many more differences, I'm sure there are tohers that will chime in

    Brett,
Whenever I hear someone say 2 455's are the same or 2 350's are the same, they usually haven't got a clue on how displacement is computed. You are measuring the volume that is displaced by the pistons in the engine as they move from the lowest point(BDC) to their highest point (TDC) To figure out the volume of a cylinder, you use the following formula, V=radius squared X pi(3.14) X height. The radius is half the bore, and the height is the stroke. It is possible to have two engines that displace 455 cubic inches, but they have different bores, and different strokes. One engine may have a big bore, and short stroke, the other engine may have a smaller bore, but a longer stroke, but they both displace the same volume. Tell your friends to take a look at the bore and stroke of the olds 455, and the Buick 455, and even the Pontiac 455. They are all different, yet they all displace 455 cubic inches. The engines are all visually different. I hope you won the bet.

    Buick 455 has a 4.3125 bore, and a 3.90 stroke. 4.3125 divided by 2 =2.156, squared=4.649 X 3.14=14.606 X 3.90=56.965 cubic inches/cylinder X8=455.724 cubic inches

    Oldsmobile 455 has a 4.126 bore, and 4.250 stroke 4.126 divided by 2 =2.063, squared=4.256 X 3.14=13.370 X 4.250=56.82 cubic inches/ cylinder X 8=454.597 cubic inches

Pontiac 455 has a 4.1522 bore, and 4.21 stroke. This motor is close to the Oldsmobile. The pistons and rods would not interchange though. I'm sure the rod length , and the compression height on the pistons are completely different for all 3 engines.

    Whatdja win?

Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Chevy 350's, and Buick, Olds, Pontiac 455's, plus the unmentionable Chebby 45* oildrinker - All different engines, nothing will interchange across GM divisions, except the oil inside them.

Of course, the above engines are listed in order of excellence. :TU:
