We lived 2 block off Tampa bay for 20 of those years. Only car damage was when the wife went sight seeing after a storm and drove through to deep of water with her Astro van. sucked the engine full of salt water. Ins Co totaled it out.

Although we have only been full-time Florida residents for 10 months, we were "snowbirds" before that. We have owned property here since 1986. I agree with the above - particularly the last two sentences. Perhaps manufactured or mobile homes are a practical low-cost alternative to a site-built house in other parts of the country, but they are not a good option here. I have been following the news pretty carefully since Irma struck SW Florida, and although there were certainly block houses that were flood-damaged, the homes that were totally destroyed were mostly of the mobile home variety. If you travel around this country you will find a certain type of construction prevails in each specific area. Here it's block, and that's what you want. Metal roofs also do better then asphalt shingles. Our metal roof suffered absolutely no damage, the neighbor across the street is currently living in a house with a blue tarp covering much of what used to be an asphalt shingle roof.
