Guys, I bought a rear disc brake conversion kit for my 71 Skylark with original 8.5 10 bolt and bolt in axles. The kit I bought was from Pirate Jacks Restorations on EBay, but its the same kit as Jegs 630611, 11" drilled slotted kit. So far it seems OK but the drilled/slotted rotors will not slip over the axles, the outer diameter of the largest part of the axle flange is too large to fit inside of that area of the rotor. It seems like that rotor is meant for a car with a built in drum brake style parking brake. So I am going to see if I can get them turned. Just a heads up! Has anyone else had this issue?

I had the same issue with the kit from Right Stuff. I just removed some material from the axle with a bench grinder.

It was noted in the instuctions that came with my kit that the rotors may not fit all axles.

Yes, this is a known modification that has to be made. I had it done to my axles when I got the rear from MonzaZ here and it was a Right Stuff kit. Most of these kits use the T/A rear rotors and the folks that swapped them back in the late 70s had to have them turned down as well. The only rotors I think that wouldn't need to be turned down are the TSM rotors.

I couldn't find any posts stating this was an issue, and it wasn't listed in my instructions. When I called Pirate Jacks, they had no clue and of course asked if it was an original rear end and axles or not. Do you have a part number for these TSM rotors? Too bad I couldn't have the car running, I'd turn down the axles easily that way..I'm a little nervous about using the bench grinder on the axles...

This is the rear rotors I bought when I had issues getting the T/A rotors to clear a factory Buick wheel. That is the whole kit but I ordered just the rotors when I called them.

Caveats with these rotors, 1) I had them turned down to the same diameter as the T/A rotors. They are deeper hats than the T/A to get the caliper away from the wheel, 2) The Right Stuff brackets then needed to be swapped to the opposite sides (right to left, left to right) to get the caliper positioned over the rotor and farther away from the wheel.

I had the axles turned down slightly to fit inside. Also had to open the holes up with a 1/2" bit to accommodate the upgraded wheel studs. Everything's bolted up and functioning but still have to rebend hydraulic hard lines to mount up to the new brake hoses properly. Not worried at all about wheels rubbing with 18 x 11's on back, although that sounds like a huge pain just to stick with 15" wheels!

That is interesting. I have a 71 Buick 8.5" rear end on my 65 Skylark and when we installed the Right Stuff brake kit I don't remember having any problems like you are having. I guess their must be manufacturing tolerances.

So was braking performance much improved by swapping the rear drums to disks?

On mine? Heck yes! It will stop on a dime and give you a nickel in change!

I hope it stops great, it should with 13" C5 Vette brakes up front and this rear disc brake swap, all with drilled and slotted rotors...body and frame are still separated undergoing restoration, so won't get to test the brakes for a while.
