The blower motor fan on my '56 Special doesn't turn as easily as it's supposed to and therefore blows the fuse after a couple of seconds. Should I spray some WD-40 on it or put some grease on it somewhere or is there something else that I should do? I'd like to try to get this one working first before I blow $50+ on a new one....
Im sure the bearing or bushing is no good. Sometimes you can carefully drill out the factory rivets and take the motor apart. Once apart, you can try and free up the bearing and clean it up. To put it back together, Ive threaded the holes where the rivets went and used machine screws to hold it together. Give it a go. Whats the worst that can happen? Its already broken.
I seem to be very good at taking things apart and not so good at putting them back together. What company do you recommend if I need a new one?
Not sure where you would find a replacement. Its outside of my field of expertise which are the 60's and 70's cars. Sounds like a fun little project though. I enjoy making repairs to things that weren't made to be repaired
Besides the bushing or bearing being shot, there's a good chance the commutator is also gummed up. It's time to replace it. The motor was a pretty common one, have a look around there are a number of places that sell them, not sure if I can name any here for fear of offending sponsors or copyright.
Does it look like this one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-1956-1...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f3ef31674&vxp=mtr I think most GM vehicles of the era used the same motor.
If there is nothing available via application you could look in a spec. book & find something that will work. As an example I changed over a '51 Jeep Station Wagon over to 12 volts yrs. ago. Of course the blower motor was 6 volts & now it needed 12 volts. Took as many measurements as possible & crossed it over to one that appeared to be "Somewhat" correct. Only thing I had to do was shorten the length of the shaft. EVERYTHING else was the same. There of course would be NO listing for a conversion such as that. Just a thought. Have you tried "Bob's Automobilia" in Ca??? Tom T.
You can R&R the motor, disassemble, clean, lubricate, shine the commutator, and paint before your get the tracking number of the wrong one you ordered. The only tricky part is keeping the brushes in the slots while reassembling and I can give some tips if you get stumped. If the universal one on ebay does not turn in the right direction, just reverse the wires...others are grounded though the case and a direction specific.
I'm not sure how relevent this is to you, but I pulled the motor out of my '69 Skylark, lubbed the bearings/bushes and it's been fine for 5 months now. I had to drill a 1/8" hole in the case to lube the end bush. I'd be trying to fix it myself- what have you got to loose ?
Thanks for the tips. Oil and WD-40 didn't help. I've replaced the fuse at least 10 times so far. Was it really necessary to put the fuse box so far up under the dash? If I figure it out I'll post it here. Thanks again for the comments and advice....
could be the wires pinched some where and shorting... All I know is my fans don't work ,, The heater cores work.. just no fans I've been busy with other stuff
