On my recently built 462 that's in my truck, I have noticed that it will smoke (blue) for a few seconds on startup whenever it sits for more than a few minutes. I'm not using any valve guide seals at this point, so I'm sure that's where the problem lies. The machinist that did my heads said that PC seals were available, but he was uncomfortable using them due to past issues with them due to a lack of lubrication on the valve stems/guides.

What valve guide seals are available to use with a dual-spring setup?

I've also noticed that the motor seems to be using more oil than I would expect. It used about 1.5qt in the first 500 miles, and about 1qt in the second 500 miles (1000 miles on the motor right now). Could I be losing this much oil past the valves?

I was a bit concerned about ring seal becuase the motor got too hot during the 30 min break in period, but the motor doesn't make any smoke other than when being started. The exhaust runs very clean while driving. Looking at the oil, it doesn't appear there is any excessive blowby, with 500 miles on the oil, it still looks very clean.

It can use that much oil very easily if you have no seals on the intake valves. They are not necessary on the exhaust. I had some heads redone with no seals many years ago and it used more oil than yours but after i installed them it took zero. Good Luck Ed K
