I need to remove the body side molding on my 70 Rivi. Is there a trick to taking it off or does it require special tools. I have already removed most of the other stainles trim, but I am not quite sure how to go about this. I have ordered a chassis repair manual and body shop manual, but they are not here yet. Also, Any tips on prepping and painting that molding before I put it back on the car.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Paint and prep? Aren't they brushed stainless?

I've done this a a couple older GM cars. There'll be mostly plastic clips on studs. Then there'll be a few locking clips at the ends. Check inside the front fender just in front of the open door and at the inside back end of the door. Maybe inside the trunk behind the cardboard if that ones not cooperating.

(Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe someone smarter will chime in!)

The quarter panel trim and the doors have studs with nuts on them at both ends, and plastic push clips for the remaining length of the trim.
You will need to remove the interior pieces below the rear window, and from the door of course. Easy stuff.
    But,
The front fenders have studs & nuts running entire length! :puzzled:
I had to take the fenders off to access all of them.
And believe me, I tried everything I could think of before resorting to that.
(separating the wheel house from the fender etc. just couldn't quite reach them.)
I wish you better luck. :beers2:
If and when I put them back on, I'm going to use push barrel clips on the front fender trim so I can just pop them back in place.

    Note of caution.
Removing a front clip may result in an entire engine rebuild, and cleaning/painting of the frame and firewall! :Dou:

Thanks for your responses. Dale, what you told me about the front fender trim is not what I wanted to hear. I don't know if I have in me to remove both front fenders, replace them for paint and then remove them again to reinstall the trim, only to put them back on. Removing fenders sounds like a major undertaking. What are push barrel clips? Somebody please tell me there is an easier way to remove this trim.

    I know what you mean.
These aren't exactly what I am going to use, but this picture should give you some idea of what I am talking about for those barrel clips.
The stud on the trim piece is inserted into the clip, and then they should just push into the holes on the fender.

I'm tempted to just fill in all the holes and go without the trim altogether.

    Dale,
Your barrel clips look like they might have rubber/silicone on the ends that sit up against the paint. These are what I took off my Skylark but cannot find a source for the rubber ends.
    These NOS or repro?

Those I pictured are from a Google search I did to show an example of what a barrel clip / retainer looks like.
Now, I can't find the site they were on. :Do No:

Here are a couple of links to fastener companies that may help.

Thanks for the information. If you reinstall the molding let us know how the barrel clips work. The side molding sure looks good and accents the lines of the car, but maybe it will look better without.

It will be awhile before I get to that point.

I like the '70 both with and without the molding.

I think it would be cool to not have the moulding, but have kind of a ghost image of it painted in place of it.

Dale or anyone else who can answer

I have removed all of the side molding (spear) on my 70 Rivi with the exception of the front fenders. I have removed the nuts I can acess from the back and front of the fenders, but there are three more over the wheel well area. Dale, I know you said previously that all of the front fender clips have nuts and I beleive you, but on page 303 of the 1970 Assembly Manual it shows the three clips over the fender well being bayonet style clips. The trim on the rear fenders would confirm that. The clips you could access from from the trunk or rear quarter window had nuts, but the remaining ones were bayonet types. Another reason I beleive Dale is not mistaken is because I have tried to pry of the molding over the wheel wells and it will not budge which makes me think the clips have nuts. I am afraid to pry too hard for fear of breaking the studs the nuts ot clips attach to.

So I have a manual that says the three clips over the wheel wheel are bayonet type and Dale, who has actually removed the trim and found his were all nut type and nut accessible without removing the fender. Can someone chime in and give me some more insight. I hope that Dale's trim had been previosly removed and whoever put it back on used the nuts.

    Randy,
I see that now too in the assembly manual. :puzzled:

To the best of my knowledge they had never been removed before.

Makes you wonder what went on between the issuing of the assembly manual and actual production. :idea2:
Or, maybe it was a shift worker preference.
("I don't care what the boss says, nuts hold it on better!" :bla: )

There was something else I came across recently that differed from the assembly manual, I can't remember what it is now. :Dou:
    Couldn't have been that important.

Some guys seem to treat these assembly manuals as gospel, but I take everything with a grain of salt.
