Starting some body work on 69 GS 350 it was media blasted and epoxy primered 7 years ago been sitting in garage all this time, ground out some rust holes in trunk lid about the size of a pencil led, welded them up, ground down ,applied body filler to welded areas, now when sanding down epoxy primer I can see a little red underneath can this be rust? or primer paint, not sure, also do I rough up all epoxy primered surfaces and apply thin coat of filler to get panel flat. I have never done body work before .thanks for any input Eddie.
You need sandable primer/ filler to block sand it flat. The epoxy primer was just to protect the metal and provide a barrier.
And watch out...some epoxy primers won't tolerate a long wait before topcoats and need to be scuffed & then a fresh coat of epoxy primer applied before topcoating. If you know which epoxy was used you can read up on the specifics. If not, it's a gamble without a fresh application. Devon
"Technically" you only have 72 hours to apply filler or any other topcoat WITHOUT prepping the epoxy ie scuffing with 80 grit for filler applications or 100/120 for primer application,...BUT,...a few weeks is fine to do this. Past 30~40 days depending how it's storage conditions were. Also,...I know we all see these shows where they pull the whole panel,....here's the deal for a novice it's not recommended just too much room for error. I myself don't recommended anyone do it,..with the better you get with bodywork the less intrusive your repairs will be. The idea is to keep as much plastic filler in the can and off the panel.
