From what I've seen with actual cars of people I knew it was 13.8-13.9 as they came from the dealer.,before we started doing some tweaking. Gary
Tom and Danielle Millers BONE STOCK original cam Stage 1 runs 14.0-13.8 98-100 mph regularly @ 4100lbs
I had a 1970 GSX Stage 1 that went 13.26 at 103 at Orange county raceway. The motor was bone stock with the exception of a 1000cfm thermo quad. The engine otherwise was factory stock with cast-iron intake and exhaust manifolds. Was only around 3650# without air plus driver at 145# it also was a stick car but I learned to adjust air pressure and control the throttle. I also learned that oil pressure to #7 and 8 was real important, as they decided to go their own way through the lights. Of course my 72 Stage 1 was faster but then again it was a blueprinted NHRA record holder.
Nick, your post has only been here twelve hours. Give it some time for people to come out of the woodwork. Devon
A 70 stage auto trans A/c car - 13.50. WT-3900 to 4000 with driver. I worked for Buick dealer in the 70's.We ran 10 or 12 stages from 70 to73 at 3 tracks.Times were from 13.90 to 12.95 for the 70,s. 71,s and up ran 14.0,s and slower. These were fully loaded GS,s off show room floor.Wt,s were from 3750 to over 4100 lbs with driver. My 70 4 speed non A/C ( just tach & radio) was the lightest & ran a best of 12.95 with a jet change and timing totaled @ 30. Remember times depend on Driver, track & Air.These times are on tracks on east coast in Va & Md. Hope that helps.
In 1970 my classmate and neighbor growing up had a new 70 green, stage 1, auto on the column, with a bench seat and vinyl roof. It went to the local dragstrip at Sanfod, NC. Out of the box it won stock eliminator and was protested. So they took it across to an old service station to tear the engine down. But the protetor was told he was going to lose his protest money because you could see the engine not been taken apart. It was brand new. So he withdrew his protest. The best it ran was 12.9 seconds with headers. So with manifolds it was in the 13s.
Let us not forget John Chamberlains brown 70 Stage that runs consistent 13.38's and is as stock as they come. Just so happens to be the exact same time as one of the car magazines "back in the day" ran with their Stage 1...
Still have that Car Craft issue with your 72 in it! One of these days you can autograph it for me! I have a May 70 issue of Hot Cars where they got a 12.80 at 109 out of one. The only mods were a set of M/T headers and a pair of slicks.
That was the one featured in this episode right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdVi4zdRuJQ <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OdVi4zdRuJQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I see someone posted about my wife's car in your other thread, but our 72 Stage 1 has gone a best of 13.78@99.22 @4120lbs. This is a 69k mile car with the stock GM cam, a 41 year old GM cam. This cam has at least 1 bad lobe, maybe more. It has cam bounce, and sounds like a rod knock when you start it. I pulled the front cover 12 years ago and installed a cam button from a 3800 v-6 as a temporary fix, and it's still together:laugh: You can still hear a faint thump when the engine is good and warm, and the oil is thinned out. SSSHHHH, don't tell the engine it shouldn't run this good with a bad cam. This is on 87 octane gas, and fighting for traction with the suck a dong BFG T/A radials. I don't think the car has ever done better than a 2.09 60' Probably getting a cam change for this season, as the wife has been bitten by the speed bug, and want's to go faster.
