    salvage yard road trip

Scotsman, While it may be best to go in the winter, I can't get out there this time of year. I was just wondering if this was the guy in Williamson NY. I know he has a lot of cars, but can't remember his name. Most of his stuff is ruined however with those damp NY conditions up by Lake Ontario.

How solid is the stuff in the yard you mention?

I've been to that yard on the rez..........it's in Lewiston, not far from Carmen's. Most of what he has left is really picked over, the Riv's I took parts from have been rotting away there for at least 15 or 20 years. His prices are quite reasonable, I got all the good stainless trim off the Rivs there 3 years ago for $25......that's was all that was left on them that was any good.

I saw a '66 Lesabre there and there was also a '65 Riv and 1 or 2 Boatails but those were really picked over as well....and the motors and trannies were also gone from all of them. Anything I looked at there more than 15 or 20 years old was so rusty the sheet metal crumbled like a cookie......and the glass is all broken. I wouldn't be surprised if what's left doesn't get crushed soon. I got parts from the same cars there 15 years ago.........unless he got in some new stock, IMHO going there is just not worth the trip. That yard is located in what seems to be a swamp.......anytime I have been there I returned with mud up to my ankles, you just sink into the ground. And the bees have pretty much taken the place over, so if you go in the summer bring some wasp killer along. The Nationals are in Batavia this summer, that's about 1 hour away from this place......it's called Able's Auto Wrecking. If I go back I'll bring my camera along and post photo's. :bglasses:

Not to add to they myth of Upstate NY boneyards, but when I was living in Rochester (lived there 5 years) I stumbled onto a salvage yard fairly close to the city. I was trying to get to the House of Guitars and made a wrong turn down a side street that dead ended in the yard. The thing I remember about that place was it had about 10-15 AMCs (mostly javelins and AMXs) and it had a few early 60's chevies and late 50's buicks. It wasn;t very big and was in kind of an industrial area. I could never find the place again. This was about in 1996 or '97. Does anybody know the place I am talking about or was it all a crazy dream.

By the way, if anybody out there owns an F-body in addition to a buick, check out Camaro specalties in East Aroura. The place is a barn full of hidden treasure for chevy and camaro and firebird guys.

I have not been to Ables in a few years but it was an interesting yard!, unfortunately several years ago (I want to say about 6-8 years ago) a large part of the yard was cleared due to the fact that so much brush and stuff had grown up in the field that it was difficult even to see some of the cars!! I'm not sure of what was lost as I had only been in the yard a couple times but I was shocked when I went in there and a complete section (towards the rear on the left side) was just GONE!!!! I think it was for the most part 1960's Fords.
There is a yard just down the road from where I now live (Forestville,NY) called Valentines (on route 39) that has very many old cars from the 40's,50's and 60's but for the most part not much of use as they have basically been there sinking into the ground for the last 30-50 years! I would LOVE to go over this yard with a finer detail and enjoy some time there but the owner just will not let you brouse on your own. I've been in there twice and was escorted and not allowed to see the whole yard each time. I will tell you that is something that can drive a real car freak like me nuts!! I could spend hours looking at (and learning from) all the old cars!!

I've been to Ables on the reservation last year. At one time they had a 67 Special that I thought may still have some usable parts. I couldn't even find the car for all of the weeds and vines. It was like walking thru a jungle. There was a guy going in and cutting out the vegatation but he had one heck of a job ahead of him. All I came out with was a bunch of mosquito bites.
I've also visited Valentines, and was also escorted by the hand into the yard.I spent about an hour B.S.ing to the gentleman about this and that and even gave him a can of gasket remover to help him out on a job he was doing. Lot of good that did!! I guess I looked like a thief and he was afraid I would rob him blind. I don't know how these people stay in business.
There is another place near Rochester that some of you may know. WILBERT'S, 1272 salt Rd., Webster, NY.All they handle is Buick and GM. They are suppose to be one of the largest GM dismantlers in the East.I think they are on the web, but I'm not sure of their address. Their phone number is 1-800-462-6749. With some searching you should be able to locate it. They also have a lot of NOS parts. They don't mind you browsing, in fact much of their stuff is pulled and stored indoors, and you just follow footprints on the floor and work your way around. Our BCA chapter took a tour of the place several years back. Kind-a neat!

    Junkyard tour

Hey, we have a group heading out to Batavia this summer for the Nationals. I know most of us would love a junkyard run on one of those days. Any interest from anyone else? Any of you locals willing to take some Minny-sodans over to your favorite boneyards? :Brow:

I can't speak for Wilbert's, but as far as Ables in Lewiston is concerned, bring a can of bee and wasp killer.......and don't get your hopes up too high. Last time I was there (last year) there wasn't much there but a few crispy well picked over cars buried in the woods......in the mud up to my ankles. And the last time I went there on a warm day, looking for a part for my Caravan, I damned near got stung to death! :Dou:

I'll be looking for a trunk hinge part when the weather breaks, and I'll try to post some photo's if I can. :bglasses:
