:TU: :TU: BRAILLE ON MONEY :TU: :TU:

I went into the credit union that I deal with, here in Canada last week. When the teller counted out my money, a brand new $50 bill was on top. Canada and the US are both replacing their bills to help stop counterfitting, hence the new bills. The way that the bills were sitting infront of me I could see the raised dots along the upper edge. I checked out the rest of the money and there was a $20 that had been introduced about 6 months ago and it was marked with braille also.

I think that this is a great idea, as it will give some people a lot more independence. All anyone has to do is feel around the edge of the bill, and it does not matter if it is upside down or not the braille can be felt, and the ammount identified. :TU: :TU:

This is pretty cool and hard to duplicate on your color printer. I think sometimes our government takes it a bit too far sometimes. The FAA had to delay the release of a text resenty until the braille version was done. I don't think they certify too many blind pilots.

    Hi Harold,
I've noticed the Braille on the newer bills too. Great idea from Ottawa, if you can believe that one! Other way to tell is just put your hand in your own pocket.
    $1.00 & $ 2.00 are now coins.
If you feel paper you know you have at least five bucks!

:) Have you noticed that every once in a while , you have to stop and empty the coins from your pockets. I have to when I start to walk lopsided.

    They get kind of heavy!
The coins are also set-up for Braille as well. The etching/scribe marks/shapes etc. have a definite meaning to the blind.
Loonies & toonies are quite noticeable.

Braille on bills? Nice idea -- it would certainly help stop the scumbags who rip off blind vendors by lying about what size bill they are giving them. (Seen that in the news at least twice this year.)

What kills me is the braille numbering on ATM machines. Uh, the screen aint braille, so how they gonna work it? (And, no, most machines don't have adequate voice prompts to let the blind use them, anyway.)

uh, what happens when you run a credit card across them, and flaten all the nubs out of the bill, will it still be readable? and if this happens will the bill be accepted at all retailers?

It would be great if us currency had braille that way when Amy asked for money and I reached into my pocket I would only pull out small bills.

I'd like to see someone try to make a fake out of that $20 bill. It looks almost near impossible.

It's going to happen sooner or later, and someone will be fooled by it.

Interestingly, someone at my office needed to scan a new bill into Adobe Photoshop, and it wouldn't allow the scan. I was able to scan a lower corner without problem though.

I wonder how much of it that the program will allow to be scanned???

Thats a great idea. Is it something inside of the paper so it can't be removed?

The Braille impressions seem to diminish once the bills are well used or well washed.
Probably still there. My finger tips may not pick them up. I'm thinking an individual who is blind may have more sensitivity to this than me.

I do not know the life expectancy of the various denominations of paper money. It was said a while ago that a one dollar note lasted about 3 months. Then was replaced. That was a compelling reason why Canada went to one and two dollar coins. It is also against the law to deface any currency. Having said that I do have a quarter on an old key chain that has 2 bullet holes in it.
