My 70 Skylark only has brake lights on the right side. I removed the harness to replace a questionable looking socket, replaced all the bulbs but still no go. If I plug in the harness and leave the ground on the harness disconnected the brake lights on the right are dim and the left ones are very dim. Once I make a good ground, the right side gets real bright and the left brake lights go out.

My guess is a ground problem, but there's only one ground on the tail light harness and the lights on the left won't come on unless it's disconnected. :Do No:

Yeah, I could leave the ground disconnected, but they're way to faint to see.

    Any ideas??
    TIA,

what about your turn signals? are they working properly?

does the problem change with your parking lights on OR off?

    Yuk,
Went out today to check the turn signals and parking lights, everything was working fine. Even the brake lights. :Do No:

I've got the tail light harness halfway unwrapped. I'm going to clean it up and inspect it closer before I rewrap it and put it back together. If it happens again, I'll test the signals and parking lights and repost. Thanks for your help.

while you have some is it exposed ....anywhere that harness has a connector or suspect looking wire, wiggle each wire while a helper holds the brake pedal down ... might find a problem that you wont have to hunt down later ...
