    OK here's the deal--

    68 Riviera
All lights work properly except brake lights and hazard flashers.

    Even the vacuum headlights!

All 6 tail lights work properly
Both sets of turn signals work correctly
Tail lights and turn signals work correctly simultaneously

No brake light activation. Fuse is GOOD for sure.
I just finished replacing the brake light switch.

I have NOT located the hazard flasher-- the hazard switch is good-- I get solid dash indicators when it is activated

Is the brake light problem and the hazard (almost surely bad or missing flasher) problem related?

Where will I find the hazard flasher or it's socket?

I'm not a Riv guy, but GM brake lights and hazard lights ciruits are on the same circuit (ie, good check for all your brake light bulbs working is to run the flashers).

So the fact neither is working, and you have checked the switch and fuse to be ok, it is probably an open circuit (broken wire) somewhere.

If you have a wiring diagram, you could disconnect the front to back connector usually located on the steering column (a-bodies), put a meter on the correct pin and check to make sure you are getting power to that point(push on brake pedal) That would eliminate everything forward of that connector.

Classic place for the wires to break is right where they pass through that rubber connector in the trunk to the bumper (again, on the a-body, not sure about Riv's).

    Hope that helps.

My latest project didn't have brake lights so I looked in my chassis manual and followed the wiring harness.Turns out that the plug that was located on the steering column that hooks the turn signal switch wasn't fully engauged with the under dash plug fully.I pushed it together and have brake lights since.I too had park lights as well as taillights but no hazard or brake lights either.Just a thought.

I replaced the hazard flasher, and now the front hazard lights work fine, and the inside indicators blink correctly.

I believe the problem must be in the brake light switch circuit. I have replaced the switch.

Remember the rear turn signals and the brake lights run on the same WIRE, so the sockets, bulbs, wires and grounds must be OK. The rear turn signals work fine.

I have ordered a chassis manual, but don't have it yet.

Can anyone tell me what powers the brake light switch or scan the underdash wiring diagram?

    Any other theories?

Something to consider here, guys is that the hazard lights and the brake lights are the same filament in the bulbs. They are controlled by the turn signal switch in the steering column. If the contacts on this switch do not make contact in the column, the turn signals will operate correctly, but the voltage to the brake lights will not reach the brake light circuits. A look at the wiring diagrams will indicate the concept here. Ray

Sorry, I should have known better than to make a recommendation from memory! :Dou: I was thinking more of the circuits, should have thought more about the wire as such.

Not much help but my 72 chassis manual shows (I'm at home now) power from "stop and hazard" fuse to brake switch (orange wire), and from brake switch (white wire) to the turn signal/hazard flasher switch in column. Sorry no info from 68...the fuse is making good contact (have had it where they just didn't make great contact with the fuseblock so even though fuse is good system didn't get power).

Hopefully you get the specific diagram soon.

Frank, you need to check the turn signal switch too. The wiring goes thew this also to divide power when using the brake lights and turn signals. AL :Smarty:

I am beginning to think that may be the culprit.
