We have rebuilt our 1968 GS400's 400 BBB, and have a question. To circulate oil throughout the engine prior to initial start-up, can you use a drill? or is there another way to get oil throughout the system?
Yes you can use a drill, what some people have done is get and old flat blade screwdriver, break off the handle and slip that end into the drill. There are also some for sale from TA performance that not only have the blade part but a circle to go around the shaft that helps prevent slipping.
The best way is to have the valve covers off. The drill motor needs to be fairly beefy. Spin the oil pump and watch the pushrods for oil. Turn the crank 90 degrees and spin the pump more. Do this until ALL the pushrods have oil coming out. The engine is fully primed. BTW - Put a bottle of GM EOS in with 15w-40 diesel oil for break in.
I use and old distributor. Just strip it down to the housing and shaft. Also run the drill motor in reverse.
coolant conditioner Also I heard you should put a tablet in the coolant that is a conditioner, all I can find is a liquid called RMI 25,Where and what is the tablet, are they the same, what is water wetter, is it the same... I could and will take any help!!! o No: Thanks :beer
ive always been told to use sae30 weight for breakin and for the first 100 miles than switch over to whatever oil you prefer.
