This is just trying answer a problem I haven't had to deal with yet.

If one were to find an electric pump of some form and place it inline after the oil filter and remove the stock oil pump would it be able to draw oil from the pan?

What about using the oil drain hole?
What about leaving the stock pump and have it feed the electric pump?

Of course anytime an electric pump would be used an oil pressure switch would have to be used to kill the engine if the oil pressure dropped by a pump malfunction.

If any of these could work let me know. I don't like the idea of paying 600+ bucks for a timing cover.

I don't think this is feasable. It takes alot of HP to push engine oil through a motor(especially cold oil) The motor would need to be very powerful, and it would need alot of amps. I know the new covers set up are expensive. An alternative is to have yours reconditioned. Go to the vendor forum on this BB. Earick Racing has a new process that reconditions timing cover oil pump pockets. I just brought the thread to the top. Check it out.

Will do, but I haven't had the oil cover off the engine and I won't untill I know that it has a problem with oil pressure. Just rooting for alternatives if my oil pump/cover is shot.

most of the time a timing cover needs replaced is due to corrosion in the water passages or water pump or the bolt hole areas, most of the time oil presure problems are fixed with rebuild kits, booster plates, or a new filter houseing.

I still kinda like the idea of an electric punp as it would take pressure off the cam and eliminate one more headache. Is there any where to get a new timing cover besides TA perforamnce?

Did a little research there is a company developing an electric oil pump to assist the primary oil pump. Probably would be cheaper than the timing cover.

I seriously doubt the cheaper part. Have you seen the prices of the really good electric fuel pumps? I'm sure an oil pump will run WAY more. Jim Burek

I am running the billet fuel pump and they run 400 dollars. I agree that an oil pump setup would cost as much or more, due to not many being made and the R&D associated with making one. Brian

    I've got to say:

This is more than just a hypothetical question, Dennis. I say that becuse of your reluctance to pay 600 bucks for a timing cover (It's a better cover, by the way, and it is an extremely complex casting in aluminum. 600 bucks is not as far out of line as you may think.)

It would seem to me that you suspect you are beginning to have an oil pressure issue, or that you fear one. So I have a question for you:

What's wrong with the car that makes you feel this way? It sounds to me as if you are getting ready to remove your timing cover.

Nothing wrong with the car yet. I haven't even bolted the engine in place yet, its just resting. Just a concern that I would like to have worked out if it materializes.

Interesting idea about the aux oil pump in adition to the reg system. I have heard allot of engine wear in when the car is first started. The aux pump could help.

Much cheaper to run an accumulator system. I am setting one up now for my new motor and I know a few others have used them. It would take a big hi amp motor to pump oil at start up. The other choice is a dry sump sytem that uses belt driven oil pump. This is very effective but very expensive.

I think that was about dry sump systems. Usually only on race cars. More common on oval, road race vehicles than drag cars.
