First of all will a set of sport mirrors off a late 70s camaro fit on a buick skylark i have heard that these 76+ sport mirrors in camaros can be modified to fit the gs properly, if so in what way, is it just the lettering or the entire base, also the long molding that goes from front wheel to rear wheel the one below the door, the skylark has a small 1 inch molding, the gs has a thicker one, are the holes size and spacing same, just getting ready to paint car and want to make sure before any color goes on.
Not sure if you want them but I have a correct set of sport mirrors for a 70-72. The hard to find set. Drivers side is remote and the other isn't remote. $100
If by the lettering you mean "objects may be closer than they appear" or something along that line, then yes, that is incorrect for 70 model. The concavity of the mirrors came along later than 70. Best bet on getting the angle right (top of mirror parallel to the ground that is) would be go to George's site and look for the article dealing with sport mirror identification. It has all the info on what bases and gaskets to use to make them work I think. http://www.buickperformance.com/SportMirrors.htm
Duane Heckman (goes by "Duane" on this board) sells the correct bases for the mirrors that puts them at the correct angle.
The bases have to be ground to sit properly on the door otherwise they will tilt inwards. Go to Buickperformance.com and there is a write up on how to make them fit. Mark
The only mirrors that are correct will come off a 71-72 GS or 71-71 Olds Cutlass. All others are different. I know the 70 GSX is the same but you are not going to find them. The plastic gaskets are different between Olds an Buick however.
The mounting set up for the different rocker trims are different. The wider moulding from a Custom or GS uses a large flat disc style anchor fastened to the car. At the forward edge it has a steel strip on the fender. Moulding top edge grips the top of the discs, bottom is secured to underside of rocker by screws. Get a set of the discs & the strip secured to the car & check fit before you paint. Wonderfully easy way to scratch a brand new paint job, I've had the experience. Year One sells them # AJ33. Check here for other vendors too.
That is a fact, I'm running into that problem right now. How much needs to come off? see pic's of the wrong way: http://www.photobucket.com/arden_dean :spank:
Not only do those mirrors look horrible as far as angle/position, but the bases are so tall that no matter what you do they will never look correct. Duane
The solution is to throw away the incorrect mirrors and buy the right ones. If you do anything other then that, you are either cutting down the mirror base, flipping the base gaskets over, etc. Plus depending on what you have to do to get the angle right, you may end up creating your own gaskets to fit the now altered mirror bases. And I can guarantee that the correct mirror gaskets I sell will not fit those mirrors. Those bases are much longer (front to back) then the originals. Duane
You also cannot just change the bases. Every piece of the entire mirror assembly may look like the originals but NONE of the pieces are interchangable. You should either throw out the entire units & buy the correct mirrors, or try to bluff them up the best you can. There is no middle ground here. Duane
It's all a "BLUFF" if it wasn't on the car when it was new, so the good news for mirror shoppers the end are solid on mine. Cut them off at the right angle and hight, drill and tap to relocate the mounting studs. Its all good!!!
